DDB Chicago Imagines Skittles Cloud As Pet, Problems Ensue

DDB Chicago continues bringing out the bizarre for Skittles in a new campaign complete with some perhaps unintended implications.

The new spot features a cloud named Freddie, who, when walked by an elderly woman “rains” Skittles after being pet. Now, the problem with portraying a product as something that comes out of a pet while being walked is…well, pretty obvious right? Okay, I get that Freddie is a cloud and that DDB has been doing strange stuff for Skittles for a while now, but you don’t want viewers asking, “Is that cloud pissing Skittles?” — a distinct possibility here. In the 30-second spot, “Cloud,” Freddie responds very differently when a curious onlooker attempts to pet him, ending with the spot-specific tagline “Pet The Rainbow. Taste The Rainbow.”

The campaign features two more 30-second adverts, each following the same oddball theme, with Freddie going to the vet and the groomers. Additionally, DDB Chicago teamed up with PR agency Olson to build a remote-controlled, Skittles-dispensing cloud. Built from the ground up, the cloud “features two unique dispensing functions and a variety of fun lighting and audio features.” It’s a high-tech evolution of The Rainbow team’s past Skittles-dispensing gifts like pinball machines and vending machines, and a pretty cool extension of the campaign (we’ll hear more about this later in the week). VCU Brandcenter’s Campaign for AICP Show Asks, ‘Where Have the Coke and Hookers Gone?’

Students at the VCU Brandcenter are back, launching a campaign promoting the AICP Show and AICP Next Awards for the 9th straight year.

The campaign takes a humorous route to displaying the lasting quality of an AICP award, showing top creatives like Gerry Graf, Co: collective partner/chief content officer Tiffany Rolfe and Droga5′s Ted Royer waxing on the perceived perks of yesteryear. While these perks may have vanished, their AICP awarded work is in the permanent exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art.

“Every generation hears about the halcyon days when perks were free-flowing – perhaps they were, or perhaps it’s all wishful thinking. But through it all, the one constant is that no one can ever take away your AICP honor and recognition,” explained Matt Miller, President and CEO of AICP.

Ty Montague of Co:Collective, Susan Credle of Leo Burnett, and Diane Jackson of DDB Chicago (all VCU BrandCenter Board members and either current or past AICP Show Curators)” collaborated with Miller, AICP Director of Events Ileana Montalvo and AICP Chief of Staff Kristin Wilcha in selecting the campaign from among those presented by second year student teams at VCU Brandcenter. The results are pretty funny, with Graf commenting on vanishing drum kits, Rolfe wondering where the prostitutes went, and Royer lamenting the ever-shrinking office. The entry deadline for the awards is March 7. Both the AICP Show and the AICP Next Awards will take place June 10-12, during AICP week. Poor Aaron Rodgers Still Gets No Respect from State Farm

Considering the Bears and Packers are perennial division rivals, it’s no wonder why DDB Chicago continues giving the latter team’s star QB Aaron Rodgers grief in its ongoing campaign for State Farm. In this latest spot for the insurance brand, Rodgers does career day, and as you’d expect, he gets no respect, even from kids, for his multimillion-dollar profession. Is Rodgers the Rodney Dangerfield of the NFL? Well, whatever the case, his “Title Belt” touchdown move has forever been tainted thanks to this campaign, which albeit has been fairly amusing since its launch a year ago. Maybe now Rodgers can just focus on helping turn around the Packers’ season.  Credits after the jump.

Savar, Eslinger, Zacharias Topline Final Cannes 2012 Juries

The Cannes committee has rolled out its final jury lists and there are some notable names, as expected, in the bunch. Namely, Big Fuel’s founder/CCO Avi Savar will topline the Branded Content & Entertainment jury as president, Saatchi & Saatchi global digital creative director Tom Eslinger will oversee the Mobile Lions and Ivan Zacharias, director on the Stink roster, will take on the jury president role for the Cannes Film Craft Lions. Phew, thus ends our Cannes coverage, we think, until the actual fest gets underway. Check out the full jury lists after the jump.

McDonald’s Employs a Talking Lemon

What better way to launch your line of premium frozen drinks than with the help of former Sopranos star Steve Schirripa? Yep, that Lemon doubled as fictional TV mobster in a past life, and now its pushing McDonald’s new fruity drinks right in time for the summer. Why make premium chilled drinks? Well, as I’m sure DDB Chicago can tell you, the McDonald’s right across the street from Wrigley Field will sell these like crazy as the heat turns up in the Windy City.

The Frozen Strawberry Lemonade campaign also features some fun, animated online work from Tribal DDB where the talking lemon embraces its roots (literally) and narrates what happens when life gives you lemons. Sure, it might not be the most innovative, grandiose campaign we’ve seen from Mickey D’s, but at least it gets us in the mood for what will hopefully be a summer to remember.
