BBDO Bumps Up Burns to MD in SF

Marc BurnssmallAfter spending the last five years in management roles in various BBDO offices, most recently serving as SVP/group account director on AT&T Wireless at the agency, Marc Burns will now fill the vacant position of managing director at BBDO San Francisco, where’s he’s been working out of for the last year. During his time on the AT&T biz, Burns helped lead teams behind efforts including the youth-focused “You’ve got a Case” starring Will Arnett and the V-Day-themed “Shout Your Love from the Mountaintop.”

Burns’s history with BBDO, though, actually dates back to 1996, when we started out in the mailroom at the agency’s Australian operations before spent the next few years as a senior account manager at Clemenger BBDO. In between his two stints within the BBDO network, Burns held account roles at Leo Burnett and worked on client side for a couple of years at Mitsubishi. Now at BBDO SF, the new MD fills out a leadership team that includes president/CEO Jim Lesser, ECD (and Goodby alum) Craig Mangan and director of strategic planning, Matt Herrmann.

GS&P’s Mangan to Take Top Creative Post at BBDO SF (Updated)

It looks like Goodby Silverstein & Partners is set to lose another longtime staffer. Just a day after reporting that Linda Harless was leaving the agency after 25 years, we’ve received confirmation from sources familiar with the matter that GS&P ACD/copywriter Craig Mangan is also taking off to join up with sister Omnicom shop BBDO as the new EVP/ECD of its San Francisco office.

Mangan, who will assume his new position at BBDO SF in the first week of July, succeeds Mike McKay, who left the agency last fall for the CCO job at fellow Bay Area operation, Eleven. BBDO San Francisco’s soon-to-be creative boss, who will lead creative for clients including Gallo, Mars, Caesars Entertainment and Vail Resports, spent approximately 16 years at Goodby, moving from the account side to creative over a decade ago. Mangan subsequently penned work including the memorable split-screen spots for the NBA from a few years ago. If you need a refresher (and since they’re currently battling in a series right now), here’s one example starring LeBron James and Kevin Garnett. Update: After the jump, you can peep the short ‘n sweet note from BBDO SF chairman Jim Lesser that confirms matters.

Mike McKay Heads to BBDO

Darn, got this tip in the morning and got scooped in the process, but whatevs, Mike McKay, he of Twitter-courting fame, is leaving Saatchi LA after two years to take on the ECD post at BBDO San Francisco. In the process, current SF ECD and 11-year BBDO vet Jim Lesser is being promoted to chairman at the office.

McKay joined Saatchi & Saatchi, aka “The Lovemarks Company” in November 2008 after spending eight years at GS&P and helped lead the former shop’s Toyota business. In a statement, he says, “BBDO is a creative powerhouse and I’m thrilled to be joining their San Francisco office. [Managing director] Brent [Smart], Jim and Nick [Bartle, director of behavioral planning] are on a serious roll, and I’m excited to team up with these guys and David [Lubars] as well.  They’re all terrific.” We’re just curious to see how that copywriter’s working out at McKay’s former employer.
