TBWA\Chiat\Day Taps Peyton Manning, Cam Newton for Gatorade

The late comedian Mitch Hedberg had a joke that went: “You don’t have to be sweating and holding a basketball to enjoy a Gatorade, you can just be a thirsty dude. Gatorade forgets about this demographic. I’m thirsty for absolutely no reason, other than the fact that liquid has not touched my lips for some time. Can I have a Gatorade too, or does that lightning bolt mean no?” Well, the brand seems to have finally issued its response to this question in a new campaign from TBWA\Chiat\Day, entitled “Sweat it to Get it,” with a resounding “No, you can not have a Gatorade, thirsty dudes.”

“Gatorade was invented to replace what athletes sweat out, Brent Anderson, executive creative director at TBWA\Chiat\Day in Los Angeles, explained to Adweek. “So the intent was to create something that might cause someone who reaches for a Gatorade to think, ‘Hold up…have I earned this?’” In other words, that lightning bolt does mean no.

In the campaign, starring Rob Belushi (son of Jim) and featuring cameos from Peyton Manning and Cam Newton (who also stars in an ongoing Under Armour campaign), customers at a gas station are told they can’t purchase Gatorade because they haven’t broken a sweat. The ads all follow the same basic formula, with Belushi as the straight man denying the customers and Manning or Newton appearing as either the manager or a fellow customer. The agency told Adweek that the ads were all “shot on location at an actual convenience store with over 15 hidden cameras” and directed by Jody Hill (Eastbound and Down). Stick around for credits and a few more spots after the jump. Read more

W+K Portland Helps Craig Robinson Protect His Dodge Dart

Amazingly, comedians Craig Robinson and Jake Johnson had yet to appear in any major films, shows or campaigns together before this week.

That all changed with the release of these inaugural clips in W+K Portland‘s new campaign for client Dodge. The theme is simple: no one can touch Robinson’s new Dart — even his equally famous and strangely nosy neighbor.

That’s the first of three :30 spots…

‘Eastbound’ Co-Creator Jody Hill’s Latest Project: Hooters

When he’s not attaching his name to film projects or conspiring on the fourth season of Eastbound & Down with partner-in-crime Danny McBride, Jody Hill is turning his attention to advertising. The Observe and Report director recently shot six spots in all for Hooters, which is undergoing a “brand refresh” that comes courtesy of its newly named AOR, Atlanta-based Fitzgerald+CO.

The agency (which you may recall recently decided to hawk a Mini after losing the pitch) came up with the tagline “Feed the Dream” for Hooters, though as you’ll see in the “Lifeguard” spot above,  the theme is not as melodramatic as it seems. Guess we’ll just have to deal with angel and devil owl puppets along with the Hooters girls. Expect future Hill-directed ads to feature NFL Monday Night Football talker/former coach Jon Gruden. If interested, check out a behind-the-scenes/Hill interview clip after the jump.

Oh yeah, as for the status of the Mini that Fitzergald+CO were selling off? We’ve been told that it’s been bought by the husband of one of the agency’s clients. They now just have to bring it down 11 floors.

K-Swiss Campaign Writer Gets ‘Eastbound & Down’ Gig

So, by now, we’re sure most of you are aware of the 72andSunny-created Kenny Powers/K-Swiss campaign that’s been lighting up the interwebs. Well, the campaign, which officially launches tonight during the ESPY’s (which K-Swiss is a sponsor of), has proven to be a boon for its writer, Matt Heath, who sources familiar with the matter say will be involved with the writing team on season three of HBO’s Eastbound & Down, which just may be the last one and of course stars Kenny Powers himself, Danny McBride. Nice one and from what we’re hearing, Heath still has a gig at 72andSunny. Check out a few more spots including the now-famous CEO ad along with credits after the jump.
