Swirl Adds Digital Leadership

Greg_Johnson_HeadshotSan Francisco-based independent agency Swirl has welcomed 20-year digital veteran Greg Johnson in the newly created position of EVP, director of digital.

Johnson has held top positions at agencies including McCann WorldGroup, William Morris Endeavor and Digitas. He also founded Magnet Studios and was Interpublic Emerging Lab’s first executive director. In the new position, Johnson will report to co-CEOs John Berg and Tom Sebastian while playing a digital leadership role on accounts including Walmart, Microsoft, Clorox and eBay.

“Swirl was born in San Francisco, the epicenter of the digital revolution,” said Johnson, “They are a perfect fit for what I’ve done and where I want to go. The agency’s innovation team is unparalleled and we share a relentless desire to be a part of building great companies. I can’t wait to get started.”

“Greg’s extensive expertise complements our team” added Berg. “He has built his career being a half-step ahead of the marketplace and adds an extraordinary set of skills and a background characterized by independent thinking and innovation. It is a rare and amazing opportunity to add someone of Greg’s caliber to the team.”

Swirl Quickly Adds New ECD

Just days after the departure of executive creative director Jim DiPiazza, San Francisco-based shop Swirl has found his replacement in Kevin McCarthy, who has spent time as a creative director at Y&R San Francisco, ECD at Grey’s Bay Area location, VP/GCD at McCann and ECD/partner at MVBMS (formerly Euro RSCG).

John Berg, managing partner at Swirl, says of his latest hire in a statement, “Kevin is a masterful team builder. He is highly collaborative both internally and externally. His desire to work cross-platform makes him the perfect person to lead our creative efforts and help continue our growth.”

DiPiazza, Swirl Part Ways

Well, it looks like Jim DiPiazza is on the market again as we’ve received confirmation that the creative, who joined up with San Francisco-based Swirl as ECD last June, has parted ways with the agency. From what we’ve been told, it was a mutual decision and Swirl’s managing partner John Berg states, “We wish Jim the very best in his future endeavors and are grateful for the contributions he made to the agency.”

Prior to Swirl, DiPiazza spent 18 months at Deutsch LA, where he penned the Black Beetle Super Bowl campaign from last year and was a creative lead on the VW business. During his career, he’s also served as a senior creative at the likes of McCann Erickson and what was then Foote Cone & Belding in San Francisco. As for Swirl, sources familiar with the matter are telling us that the agency has picked a new ECD, who should be announced soon.

DiPiazza Dips from Deutsch LA, Heads Back to SF

After 18 months spent as VP/associate creative director at Deutsch LA, Jim DiPiazza (left) has headed back to the Bay Area to take on the ECD post at San Francisco shop Swirl, which has worked with brands including eBay, Jamba Juice as well as the San Francisco Giants.

During his stint at Deutsch LA, DiPiazza was one of a handful of creative leads on the Volkswagen business, helping the agency land the account (as well as HTC) and eventually serving as ACD/copywriter on the Black Beetle Super Bowl campaign that supported the launch of the redesigned 2012 VW Beetle. Before Deutsch, DiPiazza, whose mantra is “I hate advertising. I prefer entertainment that sells,” worked as an ACD at FCB San Francisco before moving on to creative director posts at McCann New York and David & Goliath.

DiPiazza’s departure follows that of another notable Volkswagen creative, senior copywriter David Povill, who worked on “The Force” and headed to W+K in April.

Update: Joining DiPiazza at Swirl is John Berg, who stepped down from his president/CEO post at Y&R West in March and is now signing on with his new agency as managing partner.

Y&R Welcomes New West Coast CCO

Former Cutwater ECD/GCD Joe Kayser is stepping in to take the CCO post at Y&R West Coast, where he will now lead creative in the San Francisco and LA offices across all clients including Chevron, Citrix, Jenny Craig, Mattel, NCAA and Roundtable Pizza.

While at the now-defunct Cutwater (ed- it closed in January), Kayser (pictured) handled day-to-day creative work for the likes of Jeep, Adidas, LensCrafters, Persol and Google among others. As Kayser joins the Y&R fold, the agency’s West Coast president John Berg is stepping down and its North American president/CEO Tom Sebok will assume his responsibilities for the time being until a permanent successor is found.

According to the Y&R camp, Kayser’s hire is just one of “many” changes under the watch of newly installed global CEO David Sable. We’ve been told the agency will be hiring more staff in the days ahead. As for Kayser’s background, prior to Y&R, he held creative posts at TBWA\Chiat\Day SF, Hill Holliday, Hal Riney & Partners and Saatchi & Saatchi.
