The Search is Over: Draftfcb Finds New Global CEO in Carter Murray

As you may have heard by now, Draftfcb has perhaps made George Parker‘s day by finding a replacement for Laurence Boschetto in Carter Murray, a 38-year-old Brit who will now take over as CEO of Draftfcb Worldwide. Murray (pictured), who remains based in NYC, joins DFCB after spending a year-plus as president/CEO of Y&R North America. During his career, the rather young exec spent four years as CMO/worldwide account director on Nestle while at Publicis, where he also served as a member of said agency’s executive committee.

Now, with a little weight off his shoulders perhaps, Michael Roth, chairman/CEO of Draftfcb parent company, IPG, says of his new hire,”We’re very pleased to welcome Carter in this key role at an important time for Draftfcb. He understands consumer advertising and brands, has demonstrated the ability to motivate diverse teams and raise the quality of creative work, nurture client relationships and win global business. This combination of skills and experience in a dynamic new leader is what the agency needs in order to evolve its integrated model and drive growth.”

As for Boschetto, who spent four years at the helm at Draftfcb and will stay on through a transitional period and then serve as a senior advisor to IPG, Roth adds, “We thank Laurence for his contributions to our search for his successor and to the agency, including a consistent and high level of operational and financial delivery. We wish him well in his ongoing industry activity, particularly in the area of diversity and inclusion, where we will continue to work together.”

Though the transition is now underway, Murray’s official start state is still to be determined. Meanwhile, Y&R didn’t wait long to fill the void, having welcomed former VML CEO Matt Anthony as its new North American chief exec. AdAge has the full-court press on all things Murray and his arrival at Draftfcb. Read on.

Aaaand, McCann CEO Nick Brien is Out, Diamond is In

Well, Noreen at Adweek‘s trigger-finger was admittedly faster than ours at day’s end as she is indeed reporting what tipsters have been telling us since around 5-ish, that McCann Worldgroup CEO Nick Brien is no longer with the agency. As Adweek, George Parker and others have been buzzing about, Brien’s job status (along with Draftfcb boss Laurence Boschetto‘s) has been in doubt as of late, and recent comments made by Michael Roth, chairman/CEO of parent company IPG, didn’t really soothe matters. Brien had held his title as Worldgroup chairman/chief exec since April 2010 after serving as CEO of IPG’s Mediabrands.

Replacing Brien as McCann Worldgroup’s CEO is Harris Diamond, who most recently served as chairman/CEO of IPG’s Constituency Management Group. Says Roth in a statement, “Harris understands the business needs of global CEOs, across a range of industries. He has a proven track record of effectively managing a portfolio of agencies and growing the top line. He has created a strong culture of collaboration, which is increasingly key in a marketing landscape that requires integration of services. And he brings a deep knowledge of McCann in light of the alignment between Worldgroup and a number of the agencies within CMG, such as Weber Shandwick and FutureBrand.”

Along with Diamond’s appointment, IPG has given Luca Lindner and Gustavo Martinez, McCann Worldgroup president, Americas and Worldgroup president, Europe, respectively, more responsibilities with the former adding Middle East and Africa responsibilities (something he’s familiar with)and the latter, Asia-Pacific.

Draftfcb Turns Attention to Healthcare, Acquires Hudson Global

Draftfcb just sent the word out to employees this morning that it’s purchased Tarrytown, NY-based pharma marketing company Hudson Global, which houses 55+ employees and offers digital media, interactive marketing, strategy as well as data & analytics services. As a result of the acquisition, DFCB will align Hudson Global under its Healthcare umbrella, which also includes units such as Area 23, Mosaic, NeON, and ProHealth.

Despite being bought up, though, the eight-year-old Hudson Global, which focuses on pharma, diagnostic and biotech, will keep its name, its Tarrytown office and leadership that includes co-founder/CEO/president Robert Blink and co-founder/EVP Jason Goldklang. In a statement, Draftfcb global CEO/president Laurence Boschetto says, “Our acquisition of Hudson is part of a long-term plan to make strategic acquisitions that will bolster our clients’ businesses and strengthen our agency’s offerings in those markets that offer the greatest opportunity.”

Your Friday Image: Draftfcb Poses with Penguins

Can someone cue the Morgan Freeman VO on this? Anyhow, you might have remembered that Draftfcb New York picked up the Sea World business a few weeks ago. To get into the spirit of things, we suppose, DFCB president/CEO Laurence Boschetto and DFCB New York CEO/Healthcare CEO & president Dana Maiman have welcomed a new logo design (well, for the photo-op at least) and cuddled with some penguins in the process. Here’s calling to you, Shamu.

Drakoulias Assumes More Responsibility at Draftfcb

Beginning today, Draftfcb global chief of staff Peter Drakoulias (right), who took on that peculiar title two months ago, will now also handle business development efforts for the global network. As a result, Drakoulias will take over for now-former chief growth officer Nick Paul, who you may remember took over the responsibilities of Adam Levine a year ago when the latter “parted ways” with the agency. As for Paul, Draftfcb tells us that his exit was voluntary and he left to “focus on another opportunity.”

While Drakoulias adds oversight of M&A activity, biz dev, etc., within the Draft global network to his job list, the agency’s global CEO/president Laurence Boschetto has taken a moment to sing Paul’s praises in a statement, saying, “Those who have worked closely with Nick know that he has been passionately committed to the ongoing success of our organization, most recently working hard to establish an aggressive new business function first in Chicago, then in North America and later around the network. He also played a major role in uniting and leading our 361 experiential marketing offering across the USA before taking on his business development job.”

Draftfcb Appoints New Global CSO

Now that it’s got its CCO situation seemingly figured out in Chicago and San Francisco, Draftfcb is turning its focus to other senior-level positions as the agency network has now promoted its New York chief strategy officer Vita Harris to global CSO, which is a new position within the global network. A 15-year Draft veteran who served as EVP/director of Insights in New York prior to the FCB merger in 2006, Harris was named an AAF ADCOLOR “Legend” in 2010 for her contributions to the industry.

Harris, who originally joined Draft in 1996 from N.W. Ayer & Partners, has also worked at the likes of Ted Bates and Saatchi & Saatchi during her 25-year career. In a statement, Draftfcb CEO/president Laurence Boschetto speaks highly of the new global CSO, saying, “Vita has had a profound impact on our entire network thanks to her leadership role in the seamless integration of research and strategic planning into our core processes.”

Replacing Harris as Draftfcb NY CSO is Sara Bamber, formerly head of planning at Anomaly and most recently global head of strategy for Coca-Cola at SapientNitro.

Draftfcb Chicago Makes Expected Post-SCJ Cuts

As everyone predicted and reported on, in the wake of the SC Johnson loss, Draftfcb Chicago has made some major cuts. The agency has announced that it’s let go of 10 percent of local staff (approximately 100) and has reduced its global workforce by three percent. Regarding the layoffs, which Draft says affects those at all functions and levels, the network’s global president/CEO Laurence Boschetto says, “With SCJ moving elsewhere, we naturally had to take a close look at our staffing levels to make sure they were aligned with current client needs. We had closed down many open jobs several months ago in the event that the SCJ decision did not go our way, and that has helped to lessen the impact of that decision.”

Boschetto continues, ““We consider ourselves a ‘human organization,’ one that deeply cares for the well-being of all our employees, even those for whom we don’t currently have a place in our company. That is why we wanted to help as many of them as possible get jobs within the industry. This will hopefully result in an easier transition for them and for the SC Johnson business. We realize that providing such assistance on the heels of a long, arduous review is certainly not typical, but it underscores why our Chicago agency has been named one of the best places to work in the city and state 15 times over the past five years.”

Report: Draftfcb’s Top Brass Begin Layoff Discussions

In the wake of the huge SC Johnson loss, it was only a matter of time that the dreaded “L” word would be brought up in Draftfcb’s inner sanctum. Crain’s Chicago Business is reporting that agency’s top two execs, CEO/president Laurence Boschetto and global CFO Neil Miller, would be flying into Chicago today to discuss the issue of layoffs with Draft Chi’s president Michael Fassnacht and other senior managers. According to the trade, the cuts could total 200-250 in the Chicago office alone, which equates to 25 percent of the workforce in the Windy City. We’re sure we’ll hear about it when the axe actually does fall but in the meantime, you can read the full Chicago Business story here.

Draftfcb Loses SC Johnson

As some folks hinted and our poll predicted, SC Johnson came down with its decision by month’s end and as a result, the Wisconsin-based giant has ended its nearly 60-year relationship with Draftfcb Chicago and is now splitting creative duties between Ogilvy and Energy BBDO. The SCJ biz is valued at approximately $800 million, give or take, and now, Crain Chicago Business is reporting that Energy will handle the Pest Control and Home Storage units for the brand while O&M (which will operate as an integrated team with fellow WPP shop, Group M) will handle Home Fragrance and Home Cleaning.

In a statement to Crain, SC Johnson says, “”It was a very difficult decision and we truly value the many contributions the Draftfcb team has made to the success of our business over a long-standing partnership.” The products under the “Family Company” umbrella include Windex, Pledge, Raid, Ziploc and Glade. So now, the question on the top of everyone’s heads we imagine is where does this leave Draftfcb, which just brought on a new CCO?

Well, Draftfcb CEO/president Laurence Boschetto offers his take, saying in a statement, “In looking at the highly professional way we have managed SC Johnson’s business over the years as well as the strong results we have helped the company achieve for many years, it’s difficult to understand this decision, but we obviously have no choice but to accept it. We wish our SCJ colleagues all over the world continued success as they build upon the very strong foundation that our two companies have collectively established.”

Boschetto continues, “It’s important to keep this situation in perspective. Our organization has grown significantly since our 2006 merger, and we’ve consistently been among the top performing networks for IPG. That growth has allowed us to substantially diversify our revenue base, making SCJ an increasingly smaller part of our global business over the past few years.”

Yes, we know it comes off like a saving face comment, but do you think Draft Chi can survive this?
