Saatchi & Saatchi Takes on Octopus for Charter


Saatchi & Saatchi has a new campaign for Charter Communications, touting its high-speed Spectrum network with a series of new spots.

In the 60-second spot at the center of the campaign, a couple is inspired by a cooking show to buy a live octopus. But when faced with the prospect of actually cooking the octopus, the creature wraps its tentacle around the man’s hand and he runs for the bathroom. “It’s funny how seeing a clearer picture can lead you to see the bigger one,” the voiceover says over soft piano music, and the woman changes gear from looking up a recipe to looking for caring for a pet octopus. It’s kind of cute and funny, and certainly more memorable than most ads in the category.

Saatchi and Saatchi’s campaign also includes a couple of 30-second spots, taking on the more commonplace situations of a father helping his son with a science project and another father who can’t seem to get his infant to stop crying.

Here’s Heat’s New Brotastic ‘Born to Madden’ Spot

Although you have to wonder how necessary advertising the next Madden game really is, considering how football/gaming bros pretty much spend all summer salivating in anticipation of the pigskin franchise’s next release, Heat has put together a pretty brolarious spot for EA Sports’ 25th anniversary of the franchise.

In the second spot of the “Born to Madden” campaign (following the Arian Foster/Marshawn Lynch opus), directed by Wayne McClammy, it is revealed that the real inspiration for the NFL careers of Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson was a summer camp pact made in their youth to one day beat each other in Madden, as each other. The spot highlights some of the hardcore training Kaepernick and Wilson underwent, all so they could make the NFL, rise to star status, and play Madden NFL 25 against each other. So far Kaepernick and Wilson’s Madden sessions have led to only minor injuries, including a mild concussion suffered by Wilson from a stray thrown controller.

Arian Foster, Marshawn Lynch Get Generational for ‘Madden 25′

Madden is turning 25 this year. That means decades of video game football obsessions have now been around long enough to be passed from parents to children and then some. To kick off the game’s promotional campaign, EA Sports debuted “Running Back Sons” yesterday, a minute-long spot about the origins of star running backs Arian Foster and Marshawn Lynch. While you might expect their motivation to come from supportive families, inspirational coaches, and the love of the game, it turns out that their success can be traced back to a friendly battle of brinksmanship between their fictitious fathers, Darian Foster and Marshawn Lynch Sr.

Fathers Foster and Lynch (played by the actual Foster and Lynch, respectively) spend all of their time playing Madden in unusual places as their sons train for football. At one point, young Marshawn even spins around a bear, establishing the beginning of “Beast Mode.” Finally, now that Arian and Marshawn are millionaires, their fathers can play Madden in the pool, which sounds about as dangerous as training with a bear.

This spot is sure to get plenty of airtime in the next few months, especially considering Foster and Lynch have decent acting chops when it comes to commercials. As Marshawn Sr. says, that’s that beast mode right there (raspy old-man laugh) Credits after the jump.

‘NCAA Football 13′ Will Put Team Loyalty to the Test

It’s rare we ever come across work from SF-based Heat that isn’t for some new game from Electronic Arts. But, considering Heat’s high level of consistency on these projects, especially for the EA Sports imprint, we really can’t imagine the agency working for any other brand, despite the fact that Heat counts AOL and the Huffington Post among its clients.

Sure, you can note the obvious similarities between this work and the decades-old “This is SportsCenter” campaign for ESPN. But, if you can take a formula that’s proven to capture the attention of sports fans and apply it to video games, why wouldn’t you?

A TV campaign for EA Sports’ newest game, NCAA Football 13, asks the question, “If you could put any Heisman Trophy winner in history on your favorite team, would you do it knowing that it would betray historic rivalries?” The dad in the above spot admits that, yes, having 1991 Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard returning kicks for Ohio State would be nice. But, Howard played for Michigan, Ohio State’s biggest rival. Therefore, this makes his son an awful traitor, and destroying his TV is just the beginning in this father eventually exiling his son to Ann Arbor for all eternity.

Nash, Solo Go Toe-to-Toe in ‘FIFA Soccer 12′

When he’s not starring or moonlighting in VitaminWater ads, getting Bieberized on the b-ball court or directing documentaries, Renaissance man/NBA star Steve Nash is making the most of his lockout time by, yes, playing video games with the one-and-only Hope Solo. In this latest EA Sports campaign from San Francisco’s Heat (and production company Skunk), the sports pros do battle in a game of FIFA Soccer 12. Nash once again shows off his great dry wit in a little pre-game trash talk, where he describes himself as “a gorilla and a leopard” with the straightest of faces. Guess it can be kinda fun watching other people play video games after all

If the Nash/Solo battle doesn’t suit you, a second spot in the Soccer 12 Matchups series stars Landon Donovan and SF Giants pitcher Tim “I’m Not the Guy from Dazed & Confused” Lincecum. See below. Credits after the jump.
