IPG Top Brass Weighs in on Publicis-Omnicom Alliance

And so it continues with the industry reaction to Publicom Omnicis Prime or whatever the new entity is called nowadays. We’ve just obtained separate memos to staff sent this morning from IPG chairman/CEO Michael Roth and IPG Mediabrands CEO Matt Seiler regarding their competitors’ merger. The former prefaces his lengthy note with the headline “Too Big to Fail?” while the latter offers a few reasons why IPG is dandy along with a little hint of some good news to come very soon on the UM front. We’ll just leave you with this Seiler tidbit below and let you read Roth’s perspective after the jump.

Says the Mediabrands chief exec, “Later today, we will announce another new business win, this time for UM.  In the words of the newest IPG Mediabrands client, ‘scale matters, up to a point’…IPGMB is ‘big enough’  & then it’s about tailored service, which is where you rise above the rest.…”I think that says it all.” Read on what Roth has to say including IPG’s thoughts on major M&A efforts. We say it’s an interesting read.

Tipsters Were Right: Beaven Out at Initiative, Hytner Takes Over

After days of no replies from the Initiative camp and phone calls that went straight to an assistant, who said “he’s in a meeting” on Monday, Campaign confirms that Richard Beaven is out at the IPG agency after four years. According to the trade, Jim Hytner (looking quizzical to your left) who has been serving as president of Universal McCann’s G14 Group, will serve as global chief exec at Initiative, which is also moving its headquarters from New York to London. Here’s a doomsday tip that we received last Saturday, verbatim:

“richard beaven out at initative.  to be replaced by jim hytner.  anyone that is does not become a “yes man” to matt seiler is out at media brands.  Matt Freeman – gone, Richard Beaven - gone, Bant Breen – gone, George Pace – gone, next up ?”

Matt Seiler, in case you didn’t know, was named CEO of IPG’s Mediabrands a year ago. No word back on the “yes man” allegations, though.

Well, Here’s One Agency That Appears to Be in the GM Media Mix

It’s been over three months since General Motors set its $3 billion media agency review in motion (as part of its larger global agency consolidation plans), and as the shops get whittled down (or so it seems), sources familiar with the matter tell us that one of those still in the mix is IPG Mediabrands. We’ve been told that Mediabrands, which is led by Matt Seiler, the PHD/Universal McCann alum who took over as head of the Interpublic unit in January, is “currently engaged” in the new biz pitch for GM’s media business. We just have to wonder if this will affect Mediabrands’ relationship with Hyundai.
