FCB Chicago Helps Grandma ‘Shop Like A Boss’ for Kmart

FCB Chicago keeps things weird for Kmart in their latest spot for the brand, “Shop Like A Boss,” although it’s nowhere near as strange as the brand’s Christmas campaign.

The spot opens on a grandma-type, billed as “Shop Your Way Member Julia Ruiz,” sitting at her computer. After clicking a button, she throws on her hoodie, shades and bling as the soundtrack shifts from serene birds chirping to a hip-hop beat. Soon she’s joined by the two other members of her entourage, and the rest of the spot (the full-length version runs around 95 seconds) is basically a music video. Ruiz and her crew roll up to Kmart, dance around, and pick up her order.

It’s a pretty simple idea, but it’s not without its moments. In the full-length version some of the humor lies just in how the idea is drawn out to such great length, and also how well this Ruiz character plays the part. The spot is meant to promote Kmart’s “shop online, pay in-store” feature, which is touted by a voiceover at the spot’s conclusion. While some viewers may not draw the connection from “Shop Like A Boss” to the service, the spot is at least (quite) memorable and ties the idea to the brand.

Peterson & Co. at Euro Unveil First Work for Cracker Barrel

Four months after officially being named AOR for highway exit fave Cracker Barrel, Euro RSCG Chicago has rolled out its first work for the restaurant chain and dare we say, it’s nothing you’d expect from a brand that thrives on its “Old Country” style. When this spot first arrived in our tips box a week ago, we shrugged it off simply because it was a Cracker Barrel ad. But after a second glance at the “Handcrafted” work above as well as the one below, we were pleasantly surprised by the executions that reflected CB’s down-home style (including its trademark shadow boxes) but were visually appealing at the same time.

The kaleidoscopic presentation of the ads (courtesy of Paranoid director Nieto) is only improved by the musical accompaniment, especially with the spot below called “Home,” which makes us want to revisit our Fleet Foxes records immediately. It looks like Euro Chi CCO Jason Peterson and his crew may have themselves a winning formula, at least for this client. Credits after the jump.

Shirley Promoted to GCD at Euro RSCG Chicago

This one slipped by us, but Euro RSCG Chicago has bumped up Michael Shirley from CD to group creative director, digital, which, as the title suggests, calls for him to oversee all aspects of the agency’s digital work. Shirley has been with the agency for just over 18 months and during this time, he has also served as a digital creative director for other agencies within the Havas network including Palm+Havas, Camp+King and Euro 4D.

Prior to Euro, Shirley helped found NYC creative boutique agency, Mouth. Euro RSCG Chicago CCO Jason Peterson has high praise for the man, saying, “He is not an online tourist, he is the mayor. Shirley is what all clients need: a creative leader who knows that the idea and brand come first, followed up with a young and modern understanding of digital and social tools.”
