The L.A. Egotist Gives Us a Whirl Through the West Coast

As part of our ongoing collaboration with The Denver Egotist, the folks from the network’s Los Angeles quarters chime in with a look into the agencies scattered throughout the traffic-congested City of Angels. Let’s read on to see who’s now and who’s next, shall we?

Let’s be honest here. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of LA is Hollywood. Music and Movies. Advertising takes a back seat to all the glitz and glamour of Tinsletown. Which is where we step in: to highlight and showcase any and all creativity happening in Los Angeles. But to be honest, right now LA is suffering from a little writer’s block. We are struggling to break through the barriers of some really shitty advertising.

LA currently services some of the largest and most creative brands in the world like; Pepsi, Gatorade, Honda, Toyota, Playstation, and Apple. We have more automotive accounts here than any other city (we think). And yet, we still can’t seem to move the needle.

So, It’s our intention at the LA Egotist, to challenge the Los Angeles agencies to strive for better work that their brands, their consumers and this city deserve. Just read the comments here on Agency Spy. Damn, we are some mean ass mother fuckers and pretty damn funny ones, too. But we all are demanding better.

Here’s a breakdown of where things stand here on the LA walk of fame/shame:

Twitter Plays Pivotal Role in Campbell Mithun’s Intern-Wrangling

Sure. Mike McKay‘s own Twitter-based recruiting effort had higher stakes, but Campbell Mithun is putting the micro-blogging service to its own good use by hiring the “Lucky 13,” meaning the number of interns for summer 2011. Starting Feb. 13, the Minneapolis-based agency will launch a 13-day effort (get it?) that gives applicants 140 characters to “showcase their strengths…and social media moxie.” The 13 interns hired will work in creative (AD or CW), account management, tech and media. Here’s the one caveat: Applicants must be a college student with a graduation date between fall 2010 and summer 2012. Who knows, maybe they’ll even make a thrilling hip-hop video out of their whole experience. Go here for info.

Mike McKay Heads to BBDO

Darn, got this tip in the morning and got scooped in the process, but whatevs, Mike McKay, he of Twitter-courting fame, is leaving Saatchi LA after two years to take on the ECD post at BBDO San Francisco. In the process, current SF ECD and 11-year BBDO vet Jim Lesser is being promoted to chairman at the office.

McKay joined Saatchi & Saatchi, aka “The Lovemarks Company” in November 2008 after spending eight years at GS&P and helped lead the former shop’s Toyota business. In a statement, he says, “BBDO is a creative powerhouse and I’m thrilled to be joining their San Francisco office. [Managing director] Brent [Smart], Jim and Nick [Bartle, director of behavioral planning] are on a serious roll, and I’m excited to team up with these guys and David [Lubars] as well.  They’re all terrific.” We’re just curious to see how that copywriter’s working out at McKay’s former employer.
