Camp+King Manages to Reunite ’6%’ of ‘Princess Bride’ Crew for Good Cause

Damn, has it already been 25 years since The Princess Bride hit theaters? Well, folks, rejoice, we have a reunion—er, well, sorta as Westley aka Cary Elwes (who hasn’t aged a bit, by the way) and the film’s director Rob Reiner star in a new campaign from San Francisco’s Camp+King for global humanitarian org, Mercy Corps. While Chris Sarandon is not in the mix, there are definitely some Humperdinck references in these two clips, which are aimed at driving attention and support to the Mercy Corps cause via our two Princess Bride alums hawking film-related, um, memorabilia. After all, who doesn’t want a piece of Meathead’s gray beard hair (below)? Credits after the jump.

Ex-Riney CEO VandenBosch Resurfaces (Updated)

It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard from Kristi VandenBosch, who let us know way back in January that she was leaving Publicis & Hal Riney/Modem after spending nearly three years as CEO at the agency. Well, fast-forward 10 months and we’ve come to learn from tipsters that VandenBosch has headed from the Bay Area to Los Angeles to take on a role at interactive agency Genex/Meredith Xcelerated Marketing. Coincidentally, we received an email this week telling us that said company (a little background for you here) just lost its CMO Keith Sedlak to D.C.-based TMG Custom Media.

Anyhow, back to VanDenBosch. The exec, who joined Genex/Meredith this week (title yet-to-be-determined) will help lead digital, CRM, social, mobile and analytics practices at the firm. As for her past life, prior to Riney, where she worked alongside the likes of Kevin Roddy and Roger Camp, VandenBosch spent seven years as president of \Tequila and has also held senior-level gigs at the likes of Draftfcb.

Update: Our lovely spies inform us that VandenBosch has joined up as chief digital officer of the Genex/MXM L.A. team, which also includes the likes of CSO Steve Kerho (remember him?), chief innovation officer Doug Rozen and chief client officer Georgine Anton.

There’s a Frightening New Art Installation in the Camp+King Offices

In February of last year, we reported that Jamie King, former co-president of Euro RSCG Chicago, was reuniting with Publicis & Hal Riney colleague Roger Camp to start a Havas-backed SF-based shop named Camp+King. In addition to coining the term “Conversation Swell” for the shop’s USP, the young agency is already counting Old Navy, Shanklee, and Yahoo among its clients.

To christen the office, Camp+King brought in Long Beach-based artist Jeff McMillan to add a somewhat terrifying new installation that will undoubtedly strike fear in the hearts of clients with an aversion to snarling sea creatures. Judging by McMillan’s body of work, which lovingly combines beauty with grotesque creatures, Camp+King knew what they were getting into. Check out more from Jeff McMillan by visiting his website here.

As long as we’re on the subject, does anyone have any disconcerting agency art they’d like to share?

VandenBosch Leaving Riney

We received word straight from Kristi VandenBosch herself that the exec is leaving Publicis & Hal Riney/Publicis Modem. VandenBosch as you may know served as CEO of the agency and spent nearly a year working in the leadership realm alongside Kevin Roddy, the former BBH creative boss who joined Riney last year as CCO. VandenBosch originally joined Riney in 2009 from Tequila and led the agency alongside Roger Camp.

Here’s her full note below:

“I’m planning on leaving Riney in mid-February. I actually decided to leave back in September, but agreed to stay through the end of the year. We were very fortunate that [chairman] Harold Sogard was willing to come out of what was surely a glorious sabbatical to join Riney at that point, which gave us a significant transition period in which to migrate my responsibilities to him. He’s a fantastic leader for Riney, and I’m delighted I got to spend four months working closely with him.

Now that everything’s pretty much off my plate, I can move on my plan to return to Los Angeles. While I’ve had some initial conversations with agencies in the market there, one of the main reasons I’m excited about returning is to help one of my closest friends launch her magazine, Dame. Dame has been her mission and passion for the past five years, and it’s going to be a fantastic adventure that I’m thrilled to be a part of.

I’m sure I’ll find my way back into the agency world at some point; I love this business and the people in it, and I’ll always jump at the opportunity to helm a great shop. It’s been such a privilege to work at Riney – the people are truly amazing, and the culture is one of the most special I’ve ever been a part of. I wish them enormous success in the future, and will always be proud to be a Riney alum.”

Lal, Koppel’s Freelance Careers Were Cut a Bit Short

Three weeks after we reported that Publicis & Hal Riney associate creative directors Rikesh Lal and Adam Koppel were leaving the agency to go freelance, they go ahead and get full-time gigs at Camp+King. Lal (pictured) and Koppel are joining C+K, which was (hmm, coincidence?) founded by ex-Riney duo Roger Camp and Jamie King at the start of the year with some help from Havas, will be joining as creative directors on Old Navy and Redbox business. The Cyber Lion/One Show-winning duo have worked with clients ranging from Nike and Converse to HP and Sprint during their careers.

Camp + King Takes the Piss Out of Fashion Marketing for Old Navy

We’re still trying to determine how the “Conversation Swell”-creating agency Camp + King has worked its way into the Old Navy mix–after all, Crispin Porter + Bogusky has been running the account for almost three years now–but we digress. Here are two new spots from the San Francisco-based Camp + King, which opened its doors earlier this year and was launched by old Publicis & Hal Riney chums Roger Camp and Jamie King.

Well, these are just two viral spots so it could be just a project thing but nonetheless, Camp + King teamed up with Epoch Films’ director Greg Bell to make fun of pretentious fashion ads on behalf of the Gap-owned retailer. Whether you’re a golf-swinging desperado or a Zoolander type, welcome to your roast. “Corporado” spot after the jump.

Update: Everything’s fine folks, Camp + King was tapped by Old Navy to handle innovation platforms for the brand and developing non-traditional strategies and media.

Roddy Resurfaces at Riney

AdAge has discovered the whereabouts of Kevin Roddy, who as we know resigned from his CCO post at BBH New York last fall. Well, the creative exec has now headed west to serve as chairman/CCO at Publicis & Hal Riney. In doing so, Roddy takes over for Roger Camp, who eventually started his own SF shop called Camp + King with former Riney cohort/ex-Euro RSCG Chicago co-president Jamie King earlier this year. You can read the full interview with Roddy here.

Update: To add some color, Roddy will partner with Publicis/Riney CEO Kristi VandenBosch in leading both Riney and Publicis Modem, San Francisco. The two Publicis agencies will remain separate brands, but will administratively report to VandenBosch and Roddy. In a statement, the former says of the latter, “Kevin is the creative partner every CEO dreams of. And importantly, he is exactly the kind of creative talent that a brand with a legacy as strong as Riney deserves. Our clients are going to feel the impact of his arrival, immediately. I’m proud he’s joining Riney, and I know we’re going to do some amazing things together.”

Camp, King Reunite with Support from Havas

It didn’t take long for Euro RSCG to reveal what Jamie King, former co-president of its Chicago office, was up to as the agency’s announced that King and his old Publicis & Hal Riney cohort Roger Camp have launched a new shop called Camp+King, which is based in San Francisco and is focused on creating a “Conversation-Swell” for brands.

Euro parent Havas is collaborating with the pair on the new endeavor, which already counts clients including Old Navy, Shaklee as well as project work for Yahoo. Camp will take on the role of principal/CCO while King will serve as C+K’s principal/CEO. Just what is “Conversation-swell,” you ask? In a statement, King says, “Inspired by groundswell, Conversation Swell is the surge of support, approval or enthusiasm for a brand,” said King. “It’s inspired by ideas, content or brand conversations and manifests in the form of virtual or real word-of-mouth advocacy for a brand. We believe this is the most powerful tool a brand can have to drive growth and it’s what our agency is all about.”

To refresh your memory, Camp “phased out” of his CCO role at Riney last year while Euro RSCG Chicago replaced King yesterday with Norm Yustin. During their time together at the former agency, they helped the agency win a Gold Cyber Lion and worked on clients including U.S. Cellular, Beam Global Spirits and Walmart.
