‘The Replacer’ Returns, with JB Smoove in Tow, in New ‘Black Ops II’ Clip

Nearly three months after 72andSunny introduced us to “The Replacer”–aka Fargo baddie Peter Stormare–in its campaign for Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II – Revolution trailer, the agency has brought back the character, now with sidekick JB Smoove in tow, for its Black Ops II – Uprising promo. Jesus, how many entries are in this franchise? Anyhow, the newly formed dynamic duo embarks on several replacing adventures from serving as weatherman to fixing cable, with Stormare being his usual, somewhat menacing self and Smoove giving us the fast-talking delivery that we first came to know and love in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

We’re not sure what the budget is here, but as the Black Ops franchise expands, so do seem the timeframe and scope of the clips promoting it. But, if you have the patience for it (it is lunchtime on the East Coast, after all), don’t let us stop you from taking in this slightly entertaining, slightly grating clip. Credits after the jump.

‘Fargo’ Villain Takes on Role of ‘The Replacer’ in Latest ‘Black Ops II’ Promo

Like a less-slick, self-assured version of Harvey Keitel‘s “The Wolf” from Pulp Fiction, actor Peter Stormare, who you might remember from playing Steve Buscemi‘s even sleazier partner-in-crime in Fargo or to a lesser extent, “Slippery Pete” on Seinfeld, stars as “The Replacer” in 72andSunny’s latest lengthy effort for Activision. This time, agency and client team up to promote the latter’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II – Revolution, which will come equipped with new multiplayer apps, a new weapon and even a zombie mode to play undead.

In the two-and-a-half minute clip above, we find that “The Replacer” is actually a way more charitable character than Wolf, lending his services to a variety of gamers, whether a frustrated, domesticated type, an expecting parent, a guy on a blind date, a landscaper or even a zoo cleaner. The intensity of previous Call of Duty clips has supplanted by comedy, and we kinda welcome the change of pace. And plus, we have a soft spot for Stormare, a man who’s played bit/supporting roles in more movies than we can count. Credits after the jump.

The ’90210′ Casting Call Continues for Old Navy

Well, we have to say once again that the cast from the original Beverly Hills 90210 has aged well as now it’s Luke Perry and Jennie Garth‘s turn to take center stage in CP+B’s “Funnovations” campaign for Old Navy continues. Jason Priestley makes an appearance once again in this spot, which perhaps carries more of a Grease vibe than its predecessor. It’s only inevitable, folks, that Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and/or Ian Ziering complete the series. We’re not holding out hope for Shannen Doherty, though. Credits after the jump.

The Future Looks Bleak in ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 2′ Doc

Following the reveal trailer that aired during last night’s NBA playoffs and showed actual game play, Activision has now unveiled the full-length, two-minute documentary for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 which was created by The Ant Farm and 72andSunny. Shot in Washington D.C. and featuring an appearance from none other than good ol’ Ollie North, the online film dramatically details the weapons of the future and looks realistic and grim enough to have us believe we’ll be wandering the desolate road with Viggo Mortensen and his son in the coming years. Check out credits if so inclined after the jump.

Gamers Called Upon to ‘Take Earth Back’

During last night’s broadcast of AMC’s The Walking Dead, Electronic Arts debuted the above spot from DraftFCB SF for the new title coming to stores March 6, Mass Effect 3. Before you fret, realize that the spot aired after the Academy Awards ended, and many who felt like remaining on the couch (me included) flipped over just in time to see it.

Since debuting yesterday, the emotional spot depicting the end of the world, an alien invasion, and the battle for humanity’s survival has already chalked up more than 75,000 views on YouTube. Filmed over six days in Prague, “Fight for Everything” is, in a word, cinematic, so much so that it’s initially quite difficult to tell what exactly the spot is advertising. But it succeeds where it aims to, making ME:3 look enticing to gamers and non-gamers alike. Sure, it’s a little bit Halo and a little bit Star Wars, but that doesn’t make images of people running for their lives any less moving.

Also, since the Vancouver hockey riots of 2011, it’s hard to imagine a scene of mass chaos that doesn’t include two young people making out. Maybe that’s the “better with Kinect” feature Electronic Arts is hinting at. Credits after the jump.

Terry Crews Takes Over, Yells Aplenty in Latest Old Spice Work

When he’s not filming Sly Stallone’s sequel to the bloody, guilty pleasure opus that is The Expendables or cracking us up as the penny-pinching pops on syndication in Everybody Hates Chris, Terry Crews is once again screaming at the screen in a series of new spots for Old Spice. W+K continues its onslaught for the P&G brand in a series of spots promoting the Red Zone body spray line.

We kind of like how Crews serves as the boisterous, aggressive counterpart to Isaiah Mustafa‘s smooth baritone casanova, though we’re not sure how this will disrupt our sleep patterns when it airs as yours truly dozes off to the telly at night. By the way, you might know the directors from the campaign, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, aka the minds behind Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job. In phase two of the “Smell the Power” campaign, look for co-branded television advertisements with fellow P&G brands Bounce and Charmin. Check out three more clips and credits after the jump.

Comcast Doesn’t Need Your Teary Apology

From Goodby and prodco O Positive comes new television campaign “Homecoming” for Comcast’s Triple-Play cable TV, Internet, and telephone service, Xfinity.

If you live in a region where Comcast is the only cable service option available (as I do), you no doubt have gotten into three or four yelling matches with their “customer service representatives” when your service inexplicably goes haywire or completely disappears for weeks on end. If you’ll recall, Comcast made the Final Four in Consumerist‘s “Worst Company in America” tournament last year (after winning in 2010), only being knocked out of contention by evil ocean-ruiner, BP. This was, mind you, after Comcast was caught begging its employees to vote for competitor Charter Communications in the tournament.

It’s no wonder many Comcast subscribers turn to alternative services after their struggles lead to bouts of crippling depression. Some, like the woman in the above spot, turn to Verizon’s fiber optic network, FiOS. But, Comcast doesn’t mind, as they know you’ll come crawling back sooner or later. (They always do, don’t they?) So, when your foolish hubris spins wildly out of control, remember that Comcast knew you were stupid all along. That random increase on your monthly bill is actually punishment for feeling entitled. Credits, and one more spot that features crying and hugging, follow after the jump.

XBOX Kinect Envisions the Future

Will 2011 be remembered as the “Year of the Great Video Game Spot?” When it debuted last month, it really didn’t look like Deutsch LA’s “Michael” ad for PlayStation 3 would have any challengers for the most memorable spot of the year. That is, of course, until XBOX and agency twofifteenmccann released the above jaw-dropping commercial, “The Kinect Effect.”

As the VO says, XBOX thought turning voice and movement into “magic” via Kinect technology “would be fun. And it was.” Hey, if you’ve ever had the opportunity to play one of XBOX’s sports titles for Kinect, there’s little argument you can make against this statement. But, then we see the same technology used for spiking a virtual volleyball in your opponents’ face used for education, surgery, and disposing of hazardous waste. Add to that a great orchestral cover of the Pixies’ “Where is My Mind?” (probably best known to many as the song that plays during the end of Fight Club), and at the end of the spots’ 77-second run time, all a viewer can muster in response is an awestruck is, to quote lauded thespian Joey Lawrence, “Whoa.”

XBOX portrays Kinect as an idea that can affect a target demo who isn’t clamoring for the next Halo installment. It’s quite a bold statement, and one that we don’t see competitors Sony and Nintendo making with their own gaming platforms. Calling it “visionary” is an understatement, as in “The Kinect Effect,” we see video games change the world. Credits after the jump.

Young Joins SF Amsterdam

Well, it appears there were a few conflicting reports coming our way last Friday regarding the state of StrawberryFrog New York, with sources saying there were a handful of staffers cut and the agency itself saying otherwise. So, for the time being, as layoff tips have yet to be confirmed on or off the record, we’ve placed the item on the backburner (though we’re still hearing plenty about how the entire NY office is now working on one floor).

Anyhow, while we wait for some more concrete info on cuts if there is any, the Frogpond in Amsterdam tells us that it’s welcomed a new ECD in Rohan Young, who joins StrawberryFrog from BBDO Paris (CLM BBDO, to be precise), where he’s spent the last few years as creative director. At SF Amsterdam, Young will serve as creative team leader alongside David Warner while also serving as ECD on Emirates Airlines, which is run by Kevin McKeon out of the Frog’s New York office. During his time at BBDO Paris, Young worked on P&G for the EMEA region.

With the NBA Lockout Looming, This is All We Have

Basically, it comes down to next Monday’s meeting between the NBAPA, the owners and commish David Stern (yes, it seems these meetings are proving to be increasingly useless) to see whether an actual season will happen, so, in the meantime, why don’t you NBA fans and gamers take solace with this spot for NBA2K12 from 72andSunny. Basically, it’s a follow-up to Jordan’s “Kiss my rings, biyatch” spot and asks fans, whether they be celebs like Drake and the dork from Dodgeball or your average joe, to profess what they think is the greatest NBA team ever. What say you, audience? Damn, this impending lockout irks us. Credits after the jump and, thanks to a tipster’s heads up, a Samuel L. Jackson-starring Nike spot that aired during the last NBA lockout in 1998.

Meet John Varvatos: Fashionista, Crate-Digger and Chrysler Driver

Hey, if hip-hop stars and NFL athletes can dig the Chrysler 300, why can’t fashion designers? Well, at least John Varvatos seems to. Just like the car itself, the current New York resident is also “imported from Detroit” and his rock-influenced style is reflected in this latest spot from W+K Portland (hey, the man is buying an Iggy & the Stooges record and his boutique took over CBGBs if you’re looking for credentials).

Guess that now that the love letter to the blue-collar world of Detroit has been sent with the Slim Shady Super Bowl (and BrandBowl-winning) ad, W+K is just content to let celebs take the wheel and set this campaign in cruise control. But, at least we give props to the agency for enlisting one of our fave directors, Mark Romanek, to helm this spot. Credits after the jump.

Agencytwofifteen, Psyop Incite a ‘Revolution’

Fable III is officially here for Xbox 360 (like you haven’t been waiting) and here’s agencytwofifteen’s new campaign for the brand, dubbed “It’s a Revolution”, which is sure to get players highly enticed to go out and purchase the third edition in the franchise.

This spot, created by the aforementioned San Fran-based shop along with VFX gurus Psyop, is set in the fictional Albion, uses real game assets and is depicted through a series of richly detailed, cinematic, slo-mo moments, telling the story of the fall of a tyrant and the rise of a new leader.

The visuals are stunning and are sure to entrance and entertain the target audience for 60 seconds of their lives. For others, not so much. If you’re within the TA, then you’re goods-if not you’ll probably shrug with indifference. Sometimes your just stuck with a double edged sword. View credits after the jump.
