Former W+K Scribe Sells ’1000 Memories’ to Ancestry.com

Two years after bringing his  “1000 Memories” site to life, Rudy Adler has announced that he’s sold his creation to Ancestry.com. 1000 Memories, if you don’t recall, serves as an outlet for helping people deal with the death of loves ones by offering shared memories in digital form. The intro clip above should help explain things, and in addition to 1000 Memories, Ancestry.com’s acquisition also includes Adler’s “Shoebox” app, a smartphone-based photo scanner that was launched a year ago. To mark the sale, the 1000 Memories crew launched a new Shoebox for iOS that lets Ancestry.com members get in on the action.

Adler, a former W+K Portland copywriter who worked on Levi’s “Go Forth” among other campaigns, offers his thoughts on the acquisition here.

Guy Behind ’1000 Memories’ Returns with ‘Shoebox’ App

Rudy Adler, who you might remember from his days as a copywriter at W+K Portland (where he last helped create the Levi’s “Go Forth” campaign), has launched a follow-up to his rather interesting labor of love, “1,000 Memories.” The sentimentality remains, though Adler and a crew of his old W+K collaborators are now moving from online to mobile with the launch of “Shoebox,” which turns your smartphone into a social photo scanner that lets you scan traditional photos and share them with your loved ones, strangers at a bar, or whomever you please.

Adler tells us, “There are trillions of photos out there, waiting to be shared with friends and family, but getting them online has traditionally been difficult and time-consuming. By putting a scanner in people’s pockets, we hope to change that and make it incredibly easy and social for people to digitize and share artifacts from their pasts.” Check out of the video above that explains things and download the app here if you so choose. Former W+K Scribe Conjures Up 1,000 Memories

Former Wieden + Kennedy Portland CW Rudy Adler, who helped create Levi’s “Go Forth” campaign, left said agency last February to develop a website entitled “1000 Memories.” The end result is a new way to deal with death in the digital age by changing the way people are remembered and bringing family & friends together to share memories of those who have passed on.

“The Internet is missing a past tense” says Adler, whose goal is to build a community and help folks eulogize and tell the stories of their late loved ones so they can be passed down for generations to come. To promote the site, Adler wrangled some collaborators including old W+K cohorts like Jed Alger to create the promo above. It’s a brilliant idea and worth the departure. Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!
