McCabe Indeed Assumes CSO Post at Leo Burnett

My, how things change after just a few weeks. After initially receiving tips about this in early September and being told at the time by the Leo Burnett camp that it was “not true to report,” official word is out that Mick McCabe has indeed headed back to his old stomping grounds to take on the role of chief strategy officer. McCabe replaces Stephen Hahn-Griffiths, who left Leo in mid-summer and eventually found a new gig at a Boston-based research and branding firm.

As for McCabe, as mentioned, this marks his second go-around at Leo Burnett, having first served as EVP, director of planning for four years. After his first stint at Leo, the exec moved on to take the chief strategy officer jobs at Deutsch and then KBS+P,  the latter of which he left early this summer (and was subsequently replaced by Jonah Bloom). Now as Leo USA CSO, McCabe will support a client roster that includes Allstate, Kellogg’s, McDonald’s, P&G, Sprint and Samsung. During his career, the exec also had planning stints at the likes of Fallon and TBWA\Chiat\Day.

Leo Alum Hahn-Griffiths Finds New Gig…We Think

It appears that nearly two months after his exit from Leo Burnett Chicago’s hub, said agency’s former chief strategy officer Stephen Hahn-Griffiths has found a new gig according to tipsters. At least he’s on to something. Read in full below, because you know you crave the long-winded explanation:

“BOSTON – October 1, 2012 – Protobrand, a research and branding firm headquartered in Boston, MA, announced today that Stephen Hahn-Griffiths, former Chief Strategy Officer of Leo Burnett, will be making a significant investment into the company and act as a strategic adviser and partner.

“I’ve been working with Protobrand for a couple of years and have been extraordinarily impressed by their approach to yielding brand solutions. After spending 20 plus years in advertising, I can see a gap in the marketing landscape for a new type of research and brand agency that can provide world class strategic thinking to their clients. While traditional agencies are particularly good at creativity, it is increasingly apparent to me that the ability to bring new insight to the table and inspire better work is what ultimately distinguishes one agency from another. I think that is where Protobrand excels. They have revolutionized consumer research with their patent-pending tool Meta4 InsightTM.’”

As for Protobrand, the Boston-based research and branding firm has functions including “Meta4″ and “18pt Brand Audit,” which makes us want to watch a movie like The Master sooner than later. During his career, Hahn-Griffiths has also worked at the likes of Mullen, where he was managing partner, CSO and Doner, serving nearly nine years and holding positions such as EVP, director of strategic planning & research.

Hahn-Griffiths Leaving Leo Burnett

Details are vague at the moment, but we’ve received confirmation that Leo Burnett chief strategy officer Stephen Hahn-Griffiths, who works out of the Chicago office, is now leaving the agency. Leo Burnett would not comment further on the matter, but what we do know is Hahn-Griffiths joined the agency 18 months ago from Mullen, where he also held the title of CSO as well as managing partner. He was eventually replaced a month later at the latter agency by Kristin Cavallo.

Hahn-Griffiths had spent two-a-half years in all at Mullen, initially joining as EVP, director of bland planning before eventually moving up to the CSO post. While at Mullen, he helped the agency win creative accounts for the likes of  JetBlue and Zappos among other achievements. During his career, the exec has held many gigs on the strategy/planning side, including an eight-year stint at Doner. We’ll let you know if and when we find out where he’s headed to next.

Mullen Welcomes New Chief Strategy Officer

Kristen Cavallo is headed from Martin to Mullen as she’s joined the latter’s Boston office as chief strategy officer. Cavallo has spent the past six years at the Martin Agency serving as SVP, planning and development but her tenure in Richmond, VA dates back to 1998 when she joined Martin as SVP, group planning director from Arnold Worldwide. During her 13 years there, she worked with clients including Coca-Cola and Miller Brewing while also helping win new business such as Walmart, Pizza Hut and Expedia. This latest move actually marks Cavallo’s second tour at duty at Mullen as she spent ’94-95 handling clients including Timberland and BMW.

In a statement, Mullen president/CEO Joe Grimaldi says, “We were looking for a catalyst who, through a special blend of skill and personal qualities, would elevate the performance of our increasingly successful Boston leadership team. There’s no question we will be more successful with her.”

Cavallo replaces Stephen Hahn-Griffiths, who left Mullen recently to join Leo Burnett Chicago in a senior strategy role.
