BBDO NY Celebrates Fourth of July for Guinness

BBDO New York solemnly pays tribute to servicemen in their Fourth of July spot for Guinness, entitled “Empty Chair.”

The spot, the latest U.S. installment of the brand’s “Made of More” campaign, was created in collaboration with Biscuit Filmworks and director Noam Murro. Its patriotism-stoking approach is nothing new to beer advertising, as Anomaly’s “A Hero’s Welcome” Super Bowl spot for Budweiser this year (to cite just one example) also celebrated American veterans in a somewhat cheesy fashion. How you view the ad will depend largely on your opinion of such an approach (as either a welcome homage or emotional manipulation) but the 90-second “Empty Chair” is certainly well-crafted. It opens on a bartender pouring a Guinness and leaving it at an empty table, an act she repeats many times over the course of the ad, at one point even stopping someone from taking a chair from the table. A delayed reveal at the spot’s conclusion puts everything into perspective, followed by Guinness’ “Made of More” tagline, which syncs well with the ad’s message.

It’s worth noting that between this solemn spot from Guinness and the opposite approach taken by Newcastle, the most memorable ads of the Independence Day season came from non-American brewers. Stick around for credits after the jump. Read more

FedEx Wants to Be Your New Holiday BFF

You have a lot of choices for speedy package delivery this holiday season. And, if you’re the kind of person people describe as “manic,” “spazzy,” or “downright insane,” FedEx desperately wants you to consider their service for all your gifting needs.

A trio of new 15-second spots from BBDO NY depicts the worst holiday shoppers among us. We have the guy who realized at the last-minute that he should send a gift, ANY gift. We have the poor woman in a sleeping bag, camped outside a storefront with the hopes of scoring a sweet deal. We also have the neglectful dad, who allows his daughter to sit on the lap of a complete stranger at his local FedEx location. Depressing? Sure, but isn’t that feeling of overwhelming hopelessness as much a part of Christmas tradition as warm eggnog and predictable disappointment?

Credits, and the final spot, follow after the jump.

BBDO, FedEx Once Again Infiltrate NFL Week 1 Coverage

If you happened to catch any NFL games since the season kicked off on Thursday night, you probably saw any one of three or four FedEx ads that’s part of a new brand campaign from BBDO NY, which aims to emphasize its client’s “customer solutions including healthcare, automotive, small business and sustainability.” The spot called “Hollywood” (above), which boasts FedEx’s ability to, yes, deliver bovine heart tissue in time for surgery, seemed to get the most airplay from our point-of-view. But maybe it was the one below or either of the two after the jump that deserved more rotation–though none of this year’s FedEx spots really elicited a chuckle or two like last year’s “Exchange Student” effort that also launched during the NFL’s opening week. Check out two more from the 2011 campaign (wait, is that Bodie from The Wire as the FedEx guy in the spot called “Two-Sided”?) as well as credits for the various spots after the jump.
