Pop Secret Aims to Please Come Movie Night (Updated)

It looks like Winston Binch and his fellow “Inventioni.sts” at Deutsch L.A. are at it again as we’ve been told that a new online service dubbed “Pop Secret Labs” is the brainchild of the agency’s chief digital officer and his cohorts. Makes sense considering that Pop Secret is a client and all, and with the “Lab,” the Deutsch gang is offering a free Google Chrome tool on behalf of Pop Secret that lets you “pop search” to find where to watch your movie of choice online (legally, that is…sorry). Anyhow, if you don’t mind sparing some change rather than hitting up torrent sites, you can download the tool here.

According to the comment thread, folks are already claiming this app is a ripoff of Can I Stream It, but it actually turns out that Deutsch and the Pop Secret teamed up with said service to build up the “Labs.” So, uh, there. As you’d expect with anything that dubs itself a lab, the experiment is evolving and in case you need some reference points, Pop Secret has also listed some of its fave movie and telly Tumblrs. Update: We’ve received a hell of a lot more info from the Deutsch L.A. camp on the matter. This should fill in all the blanks, where we learn this is “the future of advertising,” as should the demo video above.

Deutsch LA Aims to Bridge Gap Between Marketers, Agencies on the Fast, Cheap with ‘Inventioni.st’

Deutsch LA partner/chief digital officer Winston Binch and a handful of his crew are back at it again, following up efforts such as “High Rollaz” and “30 Days to Beta” with “Inventioni.st,” which the agency claims will offer marketers digital products and strategy in “5-day sprints, prototypes in 45 days, full products in six months.” If you happen to have at least $10K to spare, Deutsch LA says it will work with CMOs and startups alike to launch new products. Binch tells us, “Remarkable products are the best ads, but it’s not always easy for marketers to build them. Inventioni.st can help businesses create great digital products and services in as painless and effective a way as possible.”

If you’re so inclined for something reportedly “painless,” you can check out what inspired this particular lab, its own work including the projects mentioned above, what makes it tick and a list of “startups of the week.”

Deutsch LA’s ‘Brand Rapper’ Raps About ’30 Days 2 Beta’

Deutsch LA has certainly bombarded our radar this week, and this time around, we turn our attention to “30 Days 2 Beta.” If you can’t recall what that is, the aforementioned project, which was spearheaded by Deutsch LA partner, chief digital officer Winston Binch, concerned the building of the agency’s new web, mobile and tablet platform in a matter of, yes, 30 days. Now, to reflect on the success of the launch, Deutsch LA needn’t look any further than within to find a case study spokesman in Jason Pickar, a copywriter at the agency who you might also know as the “Brand Rapper” (he’s no Grandmaster B, though). Enjoy the infomercial-inspired vid above.

CP+B Appoints New CDO

Crispin Porter + Bogusky has promoted four-year agency vet Ivan Perez-Armendariz to chief digital officer, which we’ve been told is a new post at the MDC agency. Perez-Armendariz officially joined the CP+B camp when his shop texturemedia was acquired back in 2008. You might recall that the new CDO succeeded Winston Binch, who’s now at Deutsch LA, over 15 months ago as director of interactive production and subsequently added EVP to his title this past May.

CP+B CEO Andrew Keller says of the new, L.A.-based digital boss (who happens to be a Boulder native), “Ivan has been an enormous asset to us and an amazing partner to me. His entrepreneurial spirit and digital expertise allow him to lead in a practical and compelling way that invigorates clients as well as everyone at CP+B.”

New Web App Will Make You Shocked, Disgusted by Celebrities’ Net Worth

Here’s a fact that will undoubtedly brighten your Monday morning: Tyler Perry is worth $350 million. Next time you consider your yearly salary, remember that “Madea” is actually a more profitable concept than any of your creative ideas combined. Yeah, congratulations.

From Deutsch LA comes HighRoll.az, a new website/app/online game that challenges your to take the over/under on celebrities’ net worth. It’s also a nice tool for putting your own life into perspective, a device for motivating you to pick up where you left off on that crime-thriller script collecting dust at the bottom of your desk drawer. (But, seriously, please don’t.) Apparently, Deutsch employees Mark Hunter, Winston Binch, and Vic Palumbo came up with HighRoll.az during an LA Kings where the trio spent time guessing how much celebs were worth. Then, an internal team of Hassan Elzein, Marcus Silva, Trevor O’Brien and Luis Aguiluz spent two weeks developing the app to allow the public to play along.

Of note: Tom Cruise, Hollywood’s highest-paid actor of 2012, is worth $250 million. This means Tyler Perry is still worth 40% more than Cruise. So, when weighing your next career move, remember that jumping on couches on national talk shows is not worth as much as dressing in drag. Play the game on your PC here, and try to beat my first round score of 57,500.

Volkswagen, Deutsch Race Cars Against Fast-Talkers, Rubik’s Cubes

To prove the speed of VW cars, Deutsch asks people who know the meaning of “fast” to co-star in their latest TV spots. Four YouTube sensations—a Rubik’s Cube wizard, a beatboxer, a speed reader, and a lightning-finger guitarist—accompany Eric Norris (son of Chuck) around a race track, aiming to complete tasks in their various skill sets before the VW cars complete a lap.

Granted, it’s far easier for a car to get around a track than for a vulnerable human to read the Gettysburg address while in said screeching, speeding car. The race might not have been very fair. But, these spots are still fun, and the quickness of the VWs is nothing to scoff at. Also, can we pause for a second to appreciate “speed cuber” Anthony Brooks, who can solve a Rubik’s cube with one hand (above)?! I can’t even look at a Rubik’s cube, knowing that as soon as I touch it I will be met with total frustration and humiliation.

Deutsch did well by choosing Internet-famous individuals with awesome, unusual talents. Their presence gives us the impression that VW cars aren’t just fast, they’re original and inventive, too.

Credits and more spots from the campaign after the jump.

Binch & Co.’s ’30 Days to Beta’ Experiment Comes to Fruition

Well, not sure how to really segue from the awful news regarding the Y&R building, but we’ll just tell you that Winston Binch and his crew have come through with their new website for Deutsch Inc., which is part of a project that the agency’s aforementioned partner/chief digital officer spearheaded called “30 Days to Beta.”

We’ve been told by the Deutsch LA camp that the site was developed “as a way to change our culture and become more agile.” Throughout the 30-day process of creating the new online destination, which you have to scroll down through to view the usual client roster, leadership and other content, visitors could view the goings on of the dev team that dwelled in what they called “escape pods. ” Watching other folks write code, drink coffee and argue? Priceless. Anyhow,

Deutsch LA’s Binch & Co. Give Themselves ’30 Days to Beta’

Former CP+B partner/managing director Winston Binch, who headed to Deutsch L.A. back in April to assume the title of partner, chief digital officer, is giving himself and his current crew an assignment: Build Deutsch’s web, mobile and tablet platform in just 30 days. The “experiment” as Binch calls it is aptly enough titled “30 Days 2 Beta” and is tethered to the hopeful directive that ad folks “…need to work, get things to market, and learn faster. Do it cheaper, leaner, and more collaboratively.” Technically, the 30 Days experiment started yesterday, so we’re down to 29. Will they make it in time? Who knows, but if you want to keep up with Binch and his bunch, check out this site that includes live feeds of the geeky goings on and follow on Twitter at #30DaystoBeta.

Bogusky’s Common Collaborator Heads to Deutsch LA

We’re not sure what an “invention strategist” exactly is, but that’s the title that one Bud Caddell has assumed this week at Deutsch LA. Caddell, for those of you who don’t know, helped launched the collaborative social venture organization Common along with Alex Bogusky and Rob Schuham. Prior to that, he spent a brief moment as strategy director at Victors & Spoils and was a senior strategist at New York digital firm, Undercurrent.

Caddell’s new boss, Deutsch LA partner, chief digital officer and fellow Boulder ex-pat Winston Binch says that the new hire’s “a modern idea guy — equal parts inventor, strategist and technologist.” Guess Caddell’s title seems more appropriate now that we think about it. Anyhow, he’ll be working across all Deutsch LA accounts.

We Hear: A Crispin Creative Exodus?

Sources familiar with the matter tell us that “20 creatives [have left Crispin] since april alone, with another 12 planning on leaving this week and next.” We’ve been told that as of yesterday, another ACD and writer have left the agency. One source who left tells us, “The joke around the office is, thanks to all these guys quitting, there won’t be a need for the inevitable BK layoffs.” We’re checking in with the CP+B camp to see what’s up. Stay tuned…

Update: We’ve been hearing that 10 staffers have left CP+B’s Boulder HQ in the past month and 10 more might be on their way out, though parties associated with the agency tell us that this is “inaccurate.” We’re trying to clarify this further.

Winston Binch Splits for Deutsch

Six-year CP+B vet Winston Binch, who was housed in Boulder, co-founded Boulder Digital Works and served as partner/MD of Crispin, is leaving the agency for a gig at Deutsch LA. Here’s a letter from CEO Andrew Keller:

Dear CP+B,

Wanted to send out an update to let everyone know that Winston Binch will be leaving the agency.

While many of you may think of Winston as a partner and new business guy, Winston, along with Jeff Benjamin, Scott Prindle and Matt Walsh are the original architects of our digital process as we know it. What an amazing and significant accomplishment. We truly can’t thank Winston enough and are sad to see him go.

Over the last 18 months, Ivan Perez-Armendariz has stepped into Winston’s role of Director of Interactive Production so that Winston could focus his efforts on new business where he’s done a great job creating opportunities for the agency. Ivan along with Paul Sutton, Ryan Moreno and Tony Tung will continue to lead our digital production efforts and are clearly the best in the business. We couldn’t be luckier to have them.

Also, I’m happy to announce that Mason Reed will be taking over new business efforts and is already doing an excellent job-I will let him make his cool announcement next week.

Today is Winston’s last day. If you see him, please thank him for his impact on the agency and congratulate him on his new job at Deutsch LA. We will miss you, Winston.

Andrew

Update: Here’s official word on Binch, who joins Deutsch LA as partner, chief digital officer. CEO Mike Sheldon, take it away:

“Winston is one of the top digital talents anywhere. The goal for Deutsch LA is simple and clear: we want to be the best digital agency in the country. Hiring Winston greatly amplifies our efforts in getting there. Winston is a great leader, thinker and someone who creates amazingly inventive programs for clients. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have him join us. “
