<title>Your Final Cannes Lions 2012 Report</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><em>With the 2012 Cannes Lions is in the books, we&#8217;d like to thank our roving reporter <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Yunilda-Esquivel-profile.html">Yunilda Esquivel</a></strong>, EP at The Institute, for providing her take on the week-long event. Here are her final observations and thoughts from the French Riviera. Take it away. </em></p>

<p>After a hectic week of panel discussions, pool parties and endless warm Mediterranean nights on the Carlton&#8217;s infamous terrace, it all boils down to the much anticipated final gala in the Palais&#8217; Grand Audi Auditorium. Highlights of the evening: MJZ won the Palm d&#8217;Or, again. Wieden + Kennedy was deemed the advertising agency of the year. BETC Paris won the Film Craft Grand Prix for &#8216;Bear&#8217; for Canal+. And, the highly sought after Titanium Grand Prix went to R/GA New York for &#8216;Nike+ Fuelband&#8217;. Caviar entering the Palm D’or list, finally. Bravo!</p>
<p><strong>Most Anticipated Success:</strong><br />
Chipotle Back to the Start, Branded Content and Entertainment Lions Grand Prix.  One of the sweetheart campaigns of the year for its beautiful execution and heartfelt message to support farming families in the United States. <p>And, if you haven’t yet, download <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Willie-Nelson-profile.html">Willie Nelson</a></strong>’s frank, raspy version of &#8220;The Scientist&#8221; <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-scientist-single/id458479961" target="_blank">here</a>. <title>Your Day 4 Cannes Report</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><em>As promised, our Cannes reporter <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Yunilda-Esquivel-profile.html">Yunilda Esquivel</a></strong>, executive producer at The Institute, has weathered a long day and filed her latest observations from the event. Take it away. </em></p>
<p>Hello from the South of France!</p>
<p>Dear readers, this has by far been the longest day of the week! After a day jam packed with panel discussions at the Palais, I headed out to hit the four major events that night: MassiveMusic&#8217;s &#8220;The World&#8217;s Biggest Agency&#8221;, Indian Advertising&#8217;s event, Nunchaku + Primo, and the highlight of the week so far, a private concert on the beach hosted by Microsoft Advertising and Innocean Worldwide.</p>

<p><strong>Best Moment of the Week:</strong></p>
<p>The Fireflies (below) arrived! Ending their 1000km 8 day trek from Lake Garda in Italy to raise money for Leuka, a charity, as described on their site, formed to support Research &amp; Treatment of Leukemia at the Hammersmith Hospital, London, renowned as a world leader in treatment of Cancers of the Blood, the 50 riders Hosting their finish line party right in front of the Palais.</p>

<title>Here&#8217;s Your SapientNitro Cannes Infographic, Part Deux</title>

Sure, they might be lagged, but we&#8217;re imagining it takes some time to put these infographics together. Anyhow, here are just two examples that caught our eye and we&#8217;re sure the numbers have increased aplenty. <div>Before I dive  into some of the more notable moments of the day, let me share this  year&#8217;s festival buzzword: content. No surprise there. We&#8217;ve all been  talking about content for awhile now, but &#8211; trumping last year&#8217;s  &#8220;digital&#8221; &#8211; it&#8217;s definitely the word of the week. Every panel I&#8217;ve been  to touches on questions asking, how do we produce it? How do we  distribute it? How do we make it relevant?  Why do we distribute it? Who  can make it? Who should make it? The answers vary depending on who  you&#8217;re talking to, but everyone&#8217;s in agreement that disruptive  communication is here to stay.</div>

<div>YouTube&#8217;s <a href="http://www.canneslions.com/the_festival/festival_programme/event.cfm?event_id=13" target="_blank">How Online Video Powers Creative Innovation</a></div>
<div>The  conversation focused on the striking difference between what  traditional agencies are pushing as content and what emerging creative  content creators are doing. <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Damian-Kulash-profile.html">Damian Kulash</a></strong>, singer from the band <a href="http://okgo.net/" target="_blank">OK GO</a>, was  on the panel <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12NPVVosamc" target="_blank">talking about</a> how creative experimentation has contributed  to the band&#8217;s international success via their YouTube channel, and the  interest they&#8217;ve then garnered from advertisers precisely because of  their unique and unorthodox style. <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Marc-Speichert-profile.html">Marc Speichert</a></strong>, CMO  at L&#8217;Oreal USA, was <a href="http://adage.com/article/cmo-interviews/q-a-l-oreal-s-cmo-marc-speichert/148915/" target="_blank">quick to point out</a> the need  for a nimble creative partner, and how an agnostic, creative approach to  content creation can help a brand to connect with their audience.</div>

<div><strong>Most Fascinating Statistic of the Day:</strong></div>

<div>Research predicts that augmented reality will become the 8th largest medium, right behind mobile, <a href="http://www.canneslions.com/the_festival/speakers/inc_speaker.cfm?speaker_id=54" target="_blank">according to</a> <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Kimberly-Kadlec-profile.html">Kimberly Kadlec</a></strong>, VP of Johnson &amp; Johnson&#8217;s Global Marketing Group.</div>
<div>The  US seems to be slower to adopt the technology, but there is some great  augmented reality work being done like this fun idea for BAND-AID with  The Muppets from JWT New York. <p><em> </em>After picking up my Festival credentials, I stumbled upon Ogilvy &amp; Mather Asia&#8217;s display for their impressive new release, <a href="http://www.rawinasia.com/" target="_blank">RAW: Pervasive Creativity in Asia</a>. Two years in the making, the book explores the cultural richness of things like local markets and millenary traditions in a grassroots Asia, showcasing how creativity is being used everywhere and everyday to get ahead. I was completely blown away by the ingenuity and the message. Here I am with the authors, <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/David-Mayo-profile.html">David Mayo</a></strong>, president of Ogilvy &amp; Mather ASEAN and <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Kunal-Sinha-profile.html">Kunal Sinha</a></strong>, chief knowledge officer for Ogilvy &amp; Mather Asia Pacific. The book&#8217;s photographer, walking legend, <a href="http://www.billhardtphotography.com/" target="_blank">Steffan Billhardt</a>, is in the background. To everyone out there: <em>this </em>(expanding your mind) is what Cannes is all about.</p>

<div><strong>Best Panel of the Day:<em> Visa @ TBWA: The Making of a Global Campaign</em></strong></div>
<div>Maybe it&#8217;s because one of the stars of TBWA\Chiat\Day LA&#8217;s (yay LA!) campaign, Olympic Gold-Medal Winner, Nadia Comaneci, was actually in the room, or maybe it was because Antonio Lucio, the client from Visa, praised Lee Clow for fiercely defending the soul of the campaign when questioned by his camp, but this panel was hands down the best of the day, and had the most spirited audience of any I attended. The audience actually burst into applause throughout the presentation. &#8220;Go World&#8221;, the campaign narrated by <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Morgan-Freeman-profile.html">Morgan Freeman</a></strong>, is set to launch it&#8217;s third run in just a few weeks when the London 2012 Olympics get started. For this iteration, Chiat\Day has introduced Social Media by inviting fans to cheer for their favorite athletes by sending messages via text or video to an online hub. Add to the 9.2 million cheers, and send your favorite athlete a message <a href="https://www.facebook.com/VisaGoWorld" target="_blank">here</a>! Try it out, it&#8217;s great!</div>

<div>Even this early in the week, the Carlton is busy with hellos, welcomes and stories from the trip here. After sipping a nice sunset rosé, I&#8217;m off to bed for probably my last good night&#8217;s sleep of the week. More tomorrow!</div>
