Need a little end-of-year reading? We’ve compiled our top ten most highly-trafficked Twitter stories of 2012, which includes a look at the top 10 most retweeted tweets of all time (with a brand-new number one), how Anonymous exposed pedophiles on Twitter, the first ever-live tweet commercial, social media statistics and facts and why buying Twitter followers is never a good idea.
Here are our top 10 Twitter stories of the year.
As you might expect, Twitter’s list of the most retweeted tweets of all time is dominated by celebrities. And it changes a lot. Currently, Twitter’s retweet champion is President Barack Obama, with his November 7 re-election victory tweet racking up more than half a million shares, good enough to keep previous title-holder Justin Bieber very much in his taillights. Here are Twitter’s ten most retweeted tweets of all time.
What’s worse than knowing pedophiles exist in the world? How about having them get all ‘in your face’ on Twitter with posts looking for, talking about or sharing pictures of children? Yeah, this is happening – and Anonymous is exposing them, one sick twist at a time.
Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is garnering a lot of buzz online, and it’s about to hit new heights. The UK TV network Channel 4 will air the world premier of the official trailer this weekend, followed by the first-ever commercial chock-full of live Twitter reactions.
Did you know that links about sex are shared on Facebook more than any other type of content? Or that 25 percent of Facebook users don’t bother with any kind of privacy control? What if we told you that if Twitter was a country, it would be the twelfth largest in the world? Would you be amazed to know that 97 percent of fans on the Pinterest Facebook Page are women, or that images shared on Instagram receive, collectively, 575 Likes per second?
We’ve told you before that buying Twitter followers does not work, but it appears to be time for a refresher.
Did you know that social networking is now the most popular online activity, with users spending more than one fifth (22 percent) of their time engaging on channels such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest?
Whether you’re new to the game or a socially savvy marketing veteran, setting up a new Twitter profile or Facebook Page can be a time-consuming process, especially when it comes to working out the sizes of all the images you need to make your channels – or those of your clients – stand out from the crowd. And what about the other social platforms, like Pinterest and Google+? Wouldn’t it be great if somebody could put all of this information on a single page?
Facebook reached one billion users in 2012. That’s an absolutely amazing number – approximately 14 percent of the world’s population. What’s even more impressive is these are active users, Facebook’s definition of which is people who log in at least once a month. Which doesn’t seem particularly active, to be honest, but this has essentially become the industry standard now. So how does Twitter compare?
If you’re a history buff, or you simply like looking at info-packed infographics, this one’s for you: a complete history of the evolution of social networks, from the 1960s to today. In the early days of social, there was BBS or Bulletin Board System. Remember those? If you do, don’t feel old – you’re part of a revolution! This was one of the first ways that people used the internet to send messages back and forth, and upload data to share with one another. It’s like the first Facebook!
Did you know that Twitter now has more than half a billion registered profiles, with over 100 million in the USA alone? What if we told that, collectively, Twitter users now send 175 million tweets every day? And that the most popular events on Twitter generate (literally) tens of thousands of tweets every second?
