Android Signs Up For Twitter
Android users, your time has come: your favorite smartphone operating system now has a Twitter account.
The Android account (@Android) is just a few days old, and has tweeted three times, one of which includes a link to a video of the official unveiling of the Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS statue in front of Google’s campus (if you thought the original green ‘droid was cute, wait til you check out his delicious looking cousin!).
The account describes itself as tweeting “news, tips, and tricks direct from the Android team.” It will likely become a more consumer-oriented compliment to the established Android developer account (@AndroidDev).
As of Monday morning, the Android Twitter account has about 75,000 followers, and growing quickly: given that it is just five days old, that’s 15,000 new followers a day!
Android joins the ranks of fellow smartphone OS BlackBerry (@BlackBerry) and Windows Phone (@WindowsPhone), both of which have been tweeting for some time.
However, it’s interesting to note that Apple doesn’t have an official account for its iOS, to complete the suite of smartphone operating systems on Twitter. Instead, Apple has several accounts promoting various products, such as the @AppStore and @iTunesMovies accounts.
Stay tuned to the new Android account for news about the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich launch. The original launch date of October 11th was pushed back by both Google and Samsung out of respect for the passing of Steve Jobs. The upcoming Google event on October 19th in Hong Kong is now widely expected to be the official launch of the new product.
