Britney Spears Takes Over Twitter

She’s baaaack. Love her or hate her (and there is a serious amount of love on Twitter), Britney Spears has returned to the spotlight with the premier of her new video, “Hold it Against Me” on MTV last night. The video broke MTV’s viewing record with over 20 million people tuning in. So while she might be a controversial figure, there was a lot of Britney love going around last night and this morning, especially on Twitter.

Spears is no Twitter novice. She is the third most-popular person on Twitter with just under 7,000,000 followers, behind Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, and in front of Barack Obama.

She has used Twitter extensively for self-promotion and engaging with her fans, and last night’s music video premier was no different. Spears gave away a whopping 14 teasers on Twitter before the big day, and even retweeted kudos from Justin Bieber.

MTV even hosted a Twitter chat last night around Spears’ video premier, including guest tweeters like Jersey Shore’s Pauly D.

Her fans were just as excited as the princess of pop herself for the premier of “Hold it Against Me”. Variations of “Femme Fatale” (the name of her new album), “Hold it Against Me”, “Britney Spears”, “ProudOfBritney”, and “HIAMVideoPremier” have positively dominated Twitter’s worldwide trending topics this past week.

Take a look at some fan reactions to last night’s video premier: these are representative of the positive, encouraging sentiment towards Spears across the Twittersphere:
