Earlier this year, social media analytics specialists Simply Measured conducted an analysis of how Interbrand’s Top 100 Brands were performing customer service on Twitter.

In a time when offering strong social customer service is directly tied to protecting brand identity, what steps are major brands taking to engage with their followers effectively on Twitter?

Indeed, the further any two users are apart, the more likely it is that they will communicate with each other on a regular basis through Twitter.

Twitter, Facebook Mostly Negative About Margaret Thatcher’s Funeral [STUDY]

Former British Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher, a polarising figure if ever there was one, died on April 8th, 2013, and last week we looked at interesting data that revealed that more than four in ten comments made on social media about Thatcher’s passing were negative.

Yesterday was the ex-PM’s state funeral, and both Twitter and Facebook were consumed by the public’s reaction to the day, which was rumoured to have cost a reported £10 million – a figure that many found unacceptable. Indeed, one study has suggested that almost two-thirds of all comments made on Twitter and Facebook about Thatcher’s funeral were negative.

Twitter Addicts Suffer Withdrawal Symptoms When They Can’t Tweet [STUDY]

Are you a Twitter addict?

Try quitting Twitter cold turkey for a few days and see what happnes. No reading tweets, no tweeting, no clever hashtagging allowed.

Why would you consider such a thing? Because if you’re a Twitter addict (and we bet you are), you’ll likely feel withdrawal symptoms – and it’s better to be aware of your addiction now and do something about it than suffer needlessly later (if you’re ever separated from the microblogging platform against your will).

And it’s just kind of fun to freak you out.

Travel industry, here’s a little tidbit to brighten your Q4 earnings estimates: new research out of the University of Vermont reveals that the farther we are from home, the happier our tweets reflect us to be.

The study, released last week, titled “Happiness and the Patterns of Life: A Study of Geolocated Tweets,” reports that “expressed happiness increases logarithmically with distance from an individual’s average location.”

Let’s look at this a little more closely.

Almost half (47 percent) of 18-24 year-old internet users maintain a Twitter profile in the UK, with 35-44 year-olds (33 percent) also well represented.
