Popularity on Twitter has always been a slightly controversial topic. Most studies (and critics) agree that large follower counts aren’t necessarily indicative of anything, certainly influence, and it’s very easy to game Twitter to artificially increase your numbers (superficial as those networks always, always are).

But: people love lists, and people love winners, so lists of who is winning on Twitter – inasmuch as popularity has always been a commonly-applied measure of success in all mediums – go down as smoothly as a five-dollar milkshake.

Monday night’s Shorty Awards was a Twitter star-studded event, and one of the highlights was Amanda Palmer, formerly of the Dresden Dolls, performing a song made up entirely of tweets. The lyrics are absolutely hilarious when set to Palmer’s catchy riffs. Video and commentary are below.

Yesterday I wrote about Jack Dorsey’s return to Twitter as Executive Chairman, and proposed that this new appointment (amongst other developments at Twitter) didn’t leave a lot of room for Evan Williams, who I speculated might be on his way out.

Tuesday evening, Williams addressed some of these issues in his personal blog, but although he remains bullish on Twitter’s future, I’m still not convinced it’s something in which he is going to be playing a major role.

San Franciscans picked up picket signs emblazoned with “Shame on You!” and converged on Twitter HQ at 795 Folsom Street Tuesday morning to voice their displeasure at proposed tax breaks for the company. The company had asked for local tax exemptions to stay in San Francisco, and signed a letter of intent to do so earlier this month when the incentives were promised. The 50 or so protesters, according to reports, were not from any one group, but comprised a broad coalition of (hyper) local activists.
