Instagram usage surged almost 35 percent in the U.S. alone in 2013, and the platform now rivals Twitter for monthly active users (MAUs), with more than 40 million people in the States expected to use Instagram this year, compared to Twitter’s 43.2 million, reports eMarketer.
But where it gets really interesting is amongst mobile users. Instagram, of course, is a wholly mobile platform, and it’s 40.5 million mobile MAUs trumps Twitter’s 37.3 million. And going forward, eMarketer expects Instagram to maintain this lead, reaching 50 million mobile MAUs in 2016, compared to Twitter’s 47.7 million.
