Katy Perry, One Direction, Kanye West: Best Of Music On Twitter In 2013

Twitter has long been a haven for celebrities of all stripes, and new numbers show just how big of a deal the 140-character services has become for singers, rappers, bands and musicians.

Coming to us from Rolling Stone, these end-of-the-year stats are pretty mind-boggling.

First, we have some huge winners.

Most notably, Katy Perry won the “Queen of Twitter” crown, as she ends the year as the most followed person (musician or otherwise) on Twitter with 48.5 million followers. Close on her heels is Justin Bieber with 47.7 million followers.

But despite her tiger eyes, Perry’s not seeing as much Twitter engagement as the boys from One Direction. They own four of the top five most retweeted tweets of the year in music: their number one most-retweeted tweet (“Yesss ! I’m 20 ! Wohooo ! No more teens!” from bandmate Niall) earning them a massive 366,937 retweets and 305,030 favorites.

The most-tweeted song of 2013 might not come as much of a surprise to anyone watching the latest memes be brought to life live via Miley Cirus’ AMA performance: “Wrecking Ball” earned the pop starlet 8.1 million mentions. Despite all the love for Cirus’ song, it’s Kanye West’s Yeezus that takes the gold medal for the most-tweeted album of the year with 4.4 million tweets.

Amid music-related hashtags, rapper Eminem stands out as a big winner. #music and #nowplaying came in first and second place respectively, but Eminem’s #RapGod scored third place.

And when it came to live broadcasted music events, the MTV VMAs beat out the Grammys by a significant margin – the VMAs saw 18.5 million tweets, while the Grammys clocked in at 15.7 million.
