Twitter competitor App.net (ADN) has progressed from a paid members-only platform to a freemium model (a few months ago), with free accounts available only to those invited by paying members.

And now it announced it is allowing anyone to join with an App.net Passport account.

Is the next step a free toaster with every sign up?

Does The New ‘Twitter Patent On Twitter’ Spell Doom For ADN?

Twitter finally has a patent on Twitter – and although many are saying it will be easy to invalidate in court AND (besides that) Twitter is supposedly not interested in going on the ‘patent offense,’ some platform developers must be shaking in their old school sneakers.

And we’re guessing one very vocal anti-Twitter, Twitter is feeling a little sick: App.net.

Remember when you had to get invited to gmail? It was THE email to have for a short period of time because of that little marketing gimmick. And then folks were given limitless invitations and snagging access wasn’t quite so special any more.

Well, App.net – or ADN as the cool kids call it – is now doing something similar, with the same goal in mind: ratcheting up its desirability and giving membership a boost.

But will it work?

You’ve likely read about App.net at this point and maybe you’re unclear as to whether it will revolutionize everything online or if it will fail miserably.

Well, we don’t have an answer for you.

One thing we do know for certain though since App.net reached it’s 500k Kickstarter goal – there are a LOT of people who have $50 (the one-year membership fee). And @IHave50Dollars is joyously ridiculing each and every one of them.

But that’s not all, it’s also supporting something VERY worthwhile. Check it out.

Twitter Competitor App.net Reaches Funding Goal – Now What?

So App.net has blasted straight through its $500k Kickstarter goal and is currently at $744 with eleven hours left. And this is making Dalton Caldwell, App.net’s founder, the talk of Twitter.

The look and feel of the Alpha site is very Twitterish and early users are snapping up their Twitter handles with a quickness (it will be first come, first serve later).

But outside of potentially losing out on snagging your Twitter handle on a new platform that you likely don’t care about (yet) – what’s the big deal about App.net? That part is a little complicated.

App.net is billing itself as a “different kind of social platform” and it’s gearing up to woo you away from Twitter (and Facebook).

The catch? It will be a paid platform unlike the free Twitter and Facebook options. But THAT may not be so bad actually.
