And now we have BlackBerry making an end run to snag the “social platform” golden ring away from those slackers (Twitter, Facebook and Google+) by introducing “channels.”

This might just be one of the best holiday contests out there: RIM is giving away free BlackBerries, PlayBooks, and a whole ream of accessories on its Twitter account during the months of December and January.

In the aftermath of the UK riots earlier this month, government officials had floated around the idea of blocking access to Twitter and other social media sites next time something similar occurred. The official reasoning was that this would prevent people from using Twitter to incite violence and plan the riots themselves.
An analysis of the tweets actually sent during the riot, however, would suggest that banning people from social networks is a terrible idea.
It seemed like a good pairing, Seesmic being an enterprise level Twitter client and BlackBerry being (still) the top choice for businesses. Unfortunately the two business solutions won’t be together for much longer. Seesmic will be discontinuing support for its BlackBerry app at the end of June, effectively signaling that all of its users must look elsewhere for a BlackBerry Twitter dashboard.
Blackberry users, rejoice: the official Twitter for Blackberry app has been updated. Version 1.1 has been released, and will be in the Blackberry App Store within the next 24 hours for all your downloading pleasure.
HootSuite for Blackberry users, rejoice: the social media dashboard has been updated to deliver almost the same functionality as the robust web-based version. You can now manage multiple Twitter accounts, along with your LinkedIn profile, Facebook pages, and Foursquare presence using HootSuite on your Blackberry.
