Why Was Twitter So Obsessed With #Earthquake East? [STATS]

The earthquake that hit the East Coast just before 2pm ET on August 23 might have caused little damage, but it kicked up quite the storm on Twitter.

Within one minute of the earthquake hitting Virginia, Twitter saw 40,000 earthquake-related tweets, and at their peak earthquake tweets reached 5,000 tweets-per-second – more than Osama bin Laden’s death and on par with the earthquake in Japan.

So with all of the mind-boggling stats coming out of this relatively harmless geological event, one question remains: why were Twitter users so obsessed with this particular earthquake?

Twitter Beats Gov’t, Traditional Media And Geological Organizations To Break #Earthquake News

So maybe us East-coasters are a little pampered when it comes to natural phenomenon (thunderstorms freak many of us out), but the vast majority of us felt that 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Virginia and fanned out along the coast this afternoon.

Instead of turning to our local news or even the U.S. Geological Survey website, however, we did what we do best – we tweeted about it.
Twitter users are in shock after the unexpected natural disaster, but they are sending their prayers and well-wishes to the people of Japan and others around the world who have been affected by the tsunami.
