How Has Social Media Changed Politics? [INFOGRAPHIC]

There are many people who look back at 2008 as the first real “social media election”. Barack Obama arguably used social networks more effectively than any politician before him, and his savvy digital campaigning helped take him to the White House.

Now, four years later, this infographic takes a look at social media’s impact on politics, tracing it to the current state of political social campaigning.

Social Media Then And Now: The 2008 And 2012 Presidential Elections [INFOGRAPHIC]

The 2008 presidential election was a big deal for Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and the like. Candidates flocked to social media to attract voters, and news outlets reported Twitter followers like they were poll results.

If that sounds familiar, fast-forward to 2012. This year’s presidential election will be even bigger and better on the social plane than four years ago – and the fine folks at MGD Advertising put together a comparison of how social media was used in the election four years ago and how it’s grown today.

Twitter Users Flaunt Canadian Law Against Tweeting Election Results

Last night’s Canadian election results were supposed to remain hush-hush until all of the polls had closed, according to a dated law in Canada’s Elections Act – but that didn’t stop hundreds of Twitter users from tweeting the results ahead of the poll closures, potentially risking a $2,500 fine each.

Canada’s Dead Prime Ministers have Rap Battle on Twitter

The Canadian electoral campaign is in full swing, and the leaders have already gathered for an English and a French debate. However, those currently running for Prime Minister aren’t the only ones to take the election spotlight: a number of former (and currently dead) Prime Ministers are congregating on Twitter to have their own debates – and even a rap battle. Politics has never been so hip.
