But after a few days, you notice that your follower account hasn’t budged above 15, while you keep following piles of accounts yourself. Don’t get discouraged! Here are 13 reasons why you aren’t getting followed back, so you can revise your strategy and grow those followers.

Don’t Always Trust The Experts: Tweet What Feels Right

I’ve been teaching a few courses lately on using Twitter, and the students always want to know what they should do. What’s the rule for tweeting links? How do I get more followers? When should I tweet?

I can give them guidelines, best practices and advice, but what I can’t give them when they ask these questions is a solid answer. And, while I might not know everything there is to know about Twitter, I know a lot. No, the reason I can’t tell them a hard-and-fast answer is not because I don’t know it: it’s because there are no hard-and-fast answers. The answers are up to you.

Why Mass Following on Twitter Doesn’t Work

Aaah, Twitter etiquette. That murky, often overlooked aspect of Twitter that says it’s OK to add your personal touch to tweets, but that you shouldn’t tweet too many times at once. We’ve got you covered, though, if you’re looking to navigate the Twitter-verse. Today we’ll take a look at mass following on Twitter, and why you should almost never do it if you want to see a modicum of success using the microblogging service.

5 Surefire Ways to Manage your Tweets and Banish Twitter Overload

However, there are plenty of ways you can filter tweets and sift out the ones that are more clutter than content, so you can free yourself from being chained to an irrelevant timeline.

Twitter Now Emails You Whenever Someone You Follow Retweets You

Despite all of the gurus who say that Twitter follower count doesn’t really mean anything, you can’t deny that you get a little thrill when you get an email notifying you of someone new who will be reading your daily 140-character witticisms. And Twitter wants to give you another reason to get a little giddy about what’s going on on the network: you’ll now get an email every time someone that you follow retweets you or favorites one of your tweets.

Your Twitter Connections Say More Than You Think [Study]

Think again. New research suggests that your political ideology is given away by the connections you have on Twitter.

"This Person Started Following You On…"

Twitter is rolling out a new hovercard feature to Twitter.com that will allow you to see basic details about any user when you mouseover their name or avatar. It’s a good idea, and one that’s long overdue.

But what I’d also like to see is some additional information that says something like, ‘This person started following you on…’ and then the exact date and time when our relationship began. This should be available everywhere we see information about our followers, including on their profile. I’m confident it’s already in the metadata, so it’s simply a case of making it public. I don’t want to have to look it up – I want it right there, on Twitter, all the time.

This would tell me a number of things, but in particular knowing that a given user had potentially seen the things I had tweeted about over a period of many weeks and months gives me an immediate insight into what they are saying to me now. Because feeling like you might have to explain yourself is only slightly bit better than actually having to do it.

PS. While you’re here, why is it that when I visit somebody’s profile it tells me when I’m following them, but not the other way around? Most of the time I already know the former; the latter, either way, can be quite a surprise.
