What Is The Most Influential Day In The History Of The World? Twitter Weighs In

Each month, The Atlantic poses a “Big Question” to a variety of experts and public figures.

The answers, and the questions themselves, are often fascinating. Especially this month.

The question: “What day most changed the course of history?”

As befitting a modern media outlet, The Atlantic also turned to Twitter to let influencers weigh in.

A Short History Of The Hashtag

Perhaps the most important term in the Essential Twitter Dictionary we published last week is “hashtag.”

A hashtag, or “#”, denotes a keyword or topic on Twitter. It’s any string of characters without spaces.

Some of the most popular hashtags from the past few months are: #NFL, #Election2012, #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday.

Hashtags are the quickest and easiest way to search for and find out what Twitter users are currently talking about. They’re also key to productive Twitter engagement – hashtags put your tweets in front of the people who are interested in them.

But how did it all start?

Tweets Are Not Forever: We’re Losing 11% Of Our Digital History Every Year

If you’re under the impression that once something is put on the web it’s there forever, you might be mistaken. New research suggests that when it comes to major events documented on social media, we’re losing up to 11 percent of our content every year.

Twistory: History As Twitter Would’ve Seen It [INFOGRAPHIC]

There have been several re-imaginings of Twitter, like this infographic about the Wright brothers on Twitter and this video of Twitter and Facebook in real-life.

The following infographics take a simpler approach, with each one artistically displaying a tweet from the past – a #FF for Leonardo Da Vinci, a FourSquare check-in on the moon with Neil Armstrong, and a hashtag-loving Julious Caesar tweeting “#veni #vidi #vici”. Check out some of these examples of “historical tweets” below.

Twitter Time Warp: Top 5 Presidential Ghosts on Twitter

Twitter is new — relatively speaking. At least, all Twitter users are new compared to legendary historical figures you read about. But history and Twitter are not incompatible; many creative social media types have found ways to make those important people who are no longer with us come alive again on the internet.
