I wrote about this last week and called it pretty much spot-on, because as of right now, Sunday, November 3, 2013, at 2.30pm ET, U.S. pop superstar Katy Perry has usurped Canadian teen idol Justin Bieber as Twitter’s most popular user, and is now likely to become the first profile to reach 50 million followers on the platform.
Justin Bieber continues to reign supreme as the king of Twitter, with his now more than 45 million followers enough to edge out second-placed Katy Perry, although the gap is narrowing rapidly, and Perry is on track to catch and pass Bieber before the end of the year.
Indeed, over the past six weeks Perry has added more than 3 million extra fans to her Twitter profile, and her tally of 44 million and change is a little more than one million followers behind Bieber, who added just two million over the same period. Right now, Perry is adding twice as many followers per day as Bieber – if this continues, she could be Twitter’s numero uno by the time of our next update.
Justin Bieber continues to reign supreme as the king of Twitter, with his more than 43 million followers still leaving him well clear of second-placed Katy Perry, who passed former long-term Twitter number one Lady Gaga last month.
Indeed, Perry has gained ground on Bieber in August, narrowing the gap between her and the coveted Twitter top spot by a couple of hundred thousand followers, but the 2.2 million gap is still a big ask. Bieber, meanwhile, remains on track to become the first Twitter user in history to reach 50 million followers, which he should reach by January of next year.
We’ve been saying that it’s been on the cards for a while, but long-term Twitter numero uno Lady Gaga, who was the most-followed user on the micro-blogging social network for more than two years, has fallen to third place amongst the platform’s elite, being caught and passed by Katy Perry.
It’s been an inevitability for some time now, but Canadian teenybopper sensation Justin Bieber has finally overtaken Queen of Twitter Lady Gaga as the micro-blogging social network’s most-followed user, grabbing the crown earlier today.
I know, I know. But the deed is done. Bieber’s time-of-writing 33,323,245 followers has edged Gaga’s 33,320,260 to put him at the very top of Twitter’s elite list of power-celebrities. And, as of right now, there’s literally nobody to challenge him.
For a couple of years now, Twitter’s most-followed user list has been dominated by female pop singers. Six of the top ten Twitter users – Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Shakira – fit within that category, and if you include Justin Bieber (at #2) and Nicki Minaj (at #11), eight of Twitter’s top eleven most-followed personalities are pop stars, each of whom has tens of millions of followers.
But who do they follow on Twitter?
Lady Gaga has become the first user to reach 15 million followers on Twitter, accumulating her latest million, whom she refers to as her Little Monsters, in just 28 days.
This is a new personal best for Gaga – her previous record was adding one million new followers in 31 days between July and August of this year.
Lady Gaga has reached 14 million followers on her Twitter account, accumulating her latest million in just 32 days.
Amazingly, this isn’t a personal best – it took Gaga just 31 days to move from 12 million to 13 million followers between July and August. Since she became the first user to reach 10 million followers back in May, she’s been gaining a million followers each month at an average of 34.5 days.
