Justin Bieber continues to reign supreme as the king of Twitter, with his now more than 45 million followers enough to edge out second-placed Katy Perry, although the gap is narrowing rapidly, and Perry is on track to catch and pass Bieber before the end of the year.
Indeed, over the past six weeks Perry has added more than 3 million extra fans to her Twitter profile, and her tally of 44 million and change is a little more than one million followers behind Bieber, who added just two million over the same period. Right now, Perry is adding twice as many followers per day as Bieber – if this continues, she could be Twitter’s numero uno by the time of our next update.
Justin Bieber continues to reign supreme as the king of Twitter, with his more than 43 million followers still leaving him well clear of second-placed Katy Perry, who passed former long-term Twitter number one Lady Gaga last month.
Indeed, Perry has gained ground on Bieber in August, narrowing the gap between her and the coveted Twitter top spot by a couple of hundred thousand followers, but the 2.2 million gap is still a big ask. Bieber, meanwhile, remains on track to become the first Twitter user in history to reach 50 million followers, which he should reach by January of next year.
We’ve been saying that it’s been on the cards for a while, but long-term Twitter numero uno Lady Gaga, who was the most-followed user on the micro-blogging social network for more than two years, has fallen to third place amongst the platform’s elite, being caught and passed by Katy Perry.
Back in January of this year, Justin Bieber became Twitter’s most-followed user, dethroning long-time champion Lady Gaga, who was the first Twitter user to reach 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 million followers.
Since then, Bieber has gone from strength-to-strength, and recently became the first person on Twitter to boast more than 40 million followers. Gaga, meanwhile, faces increased competition from Katy Perry for Twitter’s second spot – now less than half a million fans ahead, from more than 1.8 million back in February, Gaga likely will drop down to the third place later this year.
Since then, Bieber hasn’t looked back, extending his lead over Gaga to a couple hundred thousand followers. Indeed, Gaga faces increasing pressure for the #2 spot on Twitter from Katy Perry – as we’ve seen time and again on Twitter, nobody is safe in the top spot, no matter how popular they seem at the time.
