Your Nephew Is Not A Social Media Expert

Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have rapidly integrated themselves into our everyday lives, triggering an enormous shift in how all we share information, both personally and professionally. These channels, uniquely, have empowered brands and customers alike, and, perhaps for the first time in our history, everybody has a voice.

But, much like many other times in our collective past, it isn’t always one that is equal.

Facebook, Twitter, Google+ & LinkedIn – Fast-Track Your Way To Social Media Expertise [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social media is a term that we throw about fairly lightly, as it’s oh-so-easy to group all the major networks under one convenient hat. But the reality is that Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn are all quite different, with each offering distinctive pros – and cons – for business professionals.

However, one thing is very true, and always has been: research pays. By making yourself an expert on each of these platforms, you can equip your brand to make better decisions on which of these mediums is right for you (and, as importantly, when), empowering your marketing division and strengthening your relationship with clients.

I Am Not A Twitter Guru

And neither are you. Nor should you want to be.

The term ‘guru’ has become so over-used and redundant that it’s essentially an insult. It’s up there with ‘social media maven’ and ‘internet marketing expert’ as labels that nobody should want or encourage. Putting aside that no one person can possibly ever know enough about these vast subjects to actually consider themselves worth of such a title, the terminology is so trite, and so cliched, that just hearing it being used in any kind of proactive manner physically makes you cringe.

So if you’re actually describing yourself in this way it tells us two important things: one, that you almost certainly know very little, and two, that anyone who wants to know should avoid you like the plague.
