One In Four People Worldwide Use Social Media [STUDY]

You probably knew that social media was popular – the rapidly-growing audiences of Facebook, Twitter and the other top platforms are heavily touted, after all – but a new study has unveiled just how big social networking has become, and, perhaps more impressively, is becoming, around the world.

In their Worldwide Social Network Users: 2013 Forecast and Comparative Estimates report, eMarketer has determined that one in four people worldwide will use social networks in 2013. This equates to a rise of 1.73 billion social media users from 1.47 billion in 2012, and this global audience is expected to jump to an incredible 2.55 billion within the next five years.

It appears that Twitter may bring a smaller, but more active, audience to brands than Facebook does.

A new study from social advertising and analytics startup Optimal examined data from 4,330 brands to determine whether each brand’s Twitter or Facebook following outpaced the other. The results are definitely interesting.

Have you ever stopped to think what it might be doing to our psyche, both collectively and as individuals?

You hear time and time again that social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook have made a massive impact on business marketing, but where’s the proof? Where are the hard numbers?

Is Google+ Really More Popular Than Twitter? The Data Seems To Say So, But… [STUDY]

For many years now, two things have been constants in the world of social media. One, women are more active users of social networking sites and platforms than men. And two, Facebook and Twitter are the two most popular social channels – always in that order – for both sexes.

Well, part of this is still true – there are more female participants of all the major social media sites in the U.S. than men with just one, obvious exception, and that’s LinkedIn.

But as for Facebook vs Twitter? Increasingly, the data is suggesting that it’s Google+ that is actually the second most-popular social network in the USA, and Twitter ranks fourth overall amongst that key female demographic.

Sure you would. But you have to memorise a few key stats, first. For example, did you know that the U.S. is the top country on Twitter, and that 34 percent of marketers have generated leads using the micro-blogging social network?

68% Of Millennials Get Their News From Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

Well, according to a new Ypulse study, more than two-thirds (68 percent) of 14-30 year-olds ride the information curve on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, which ranked first as a news source ahead of word of mouth (63 percent), news websites (62 percent) and television (55 percent).

Overall, social media ranked second as a primary source of news (behind news websites). However, 66 percent are not confident that the news they receive from any source is accurate, and 67 percent would rather be the last to know so long as the information was true.

Sure, who doesn’t, right?

So… have you tried asking for them?

Yep. Tweets that include the phrase “please retweet” are significantly more likely to be retweeted than other kinds of tweet (i.e., those that don’t say “please retweet”). And it has to be longhand, too – asking for someone to “please RT” generates a measurably lower return.

Forrester Consulting surveyed U.S. advertisers and found that more than seven in ten (73 percent) cited the use of branded pages on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as their primary social marketing tactic, ahead of buying ads on social networks (56 percent), micro-blogging (52 percent) and paying to promote content (51 percent).

Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Email – How Social Sharing Drives Sales [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social sharing drives eCommerce sales, but all shares are not created equally.

Email still leads the way, and by some distance, with the average email share especially valuable as it’s almost always a one-to-one forward (from one friend directly to another), and leads to an average dollar conversation rate of eight times that of Facebook, and more than ten times that of Twitter.
