Twitter Wins “Tweet” Trademark

<img src="http://www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/files/2011/03/gavel2.png" alt="" title="Twitter Wins "Tweet" Trademark" width="200" height="200" class="alignright size-full wp-image-4589" />It’s taken over 5 years, but Twitter is finally the trademark holder of the word “tweet”. The company settled a lawsuit against a Twitter-based advertising company this week, which will transfer the copyright of the word “tweet” to Twitter.

Twitter Sues Twittad Over “Tweet” Trademark

Twitter is going on the offensive in its attempt to own the trademark of its signature “tweet”.

The company has long been trying to register its “tweet” trademark in the US, but another third-party developer has actually beaten them to it: Twittad, an advertising platform for Twitter.

Twitter Goes After “Twiter.com” Cybersquatters

Twitter has filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization against an alleged cybersquatter who owns the domain “twiter.com” (note the single “t” that would probably scoop up a fair number of speed typers who make a mistake when trying to reach Twitter.com). This complaint cites trademark infringement, and although the “twiter.com” domain was registered in 2004 (two years before Twitter launched), they may still have a solid case.

If You Want To Look Good On Twitter, Don’t Follow In SPIN Magazine’s Footsteps

Well, here’s one that’s giving some PR person somewhere a migraine: SPIN Magazine has sent a cease and desist order to the user behind the Twitter handle @Spin – a Portland Oregon man who happens to be a DJ and is in no way trying to squat on the “SPIN” brand or misrepresent himself as affiliated with them. Stay classy, SPIN.

Is it Fair for Twitter to Ask LevelUp Studio to Change Name of “Touiteur” App?

Twitter has asked LevelUp Studio to change the name of their newly released Andriod app, currently called “Touiteur”. The obvious reason is that, when said out loud, “Touiteur” sounds nearly identical to Twitter. We take a look at Twitter’s grounds for asking for the name change below.
