Cuba Blames Twitter User And “Necrophiliac Counter-Revolutionaries” For Castro Death Rumours

Cuba has accused Twitter of both starting and helping to spread a rumour that began on Monday that former leader Fidel Castro had died, suggesting that the social network helped spread disinformation about Castro’s passing by allowing the #fidelcastro hashtag to become a trending topic.

The state-run Cubadebate website singled out one user for particularly harsh criticism, before suggesting that “necrophiliac counter-revolutionaries” worsened the situation by jumping on the story, and that Twitter has also previously censored topics that were in favour of the Cuban government.

Anonymous Hacktivist Group Creates Program To Hijack Twitter’s Trending Topics

The hacktivist group Anonymous – previously crashing corporate and government websites as a form of online protest – has now reared its head in the direction of Twitter.

The group has created software which allows anyone to hijack a trending topic, posting tweets of their choice alongside regular tweets attached to that topic.

When Twitter Trends Go Bad: Dead Babies, Pornography & Nudity Galore

Over the past week or so I’ve seen a picture of a dead baby, witnessed some full frontal nudity, and seen a snapshot of a mom feeding her baby while (**clears throat awkwardly**) giving her man “oral pleasure”. Twitter Adds 70 New Countries And Cities To Trends

Over on the official Twitter blog there’s a post about an expansion on the local trends feature on, which has added 70 new countries and cities to the resource.

We first launched Trends as a useful way for people to find out what topics are being talked about around the world, right now. Early last year, we added Local Trends to make it easier to find more locally relevant topics in specific countries and metropolitan locations. Today, we’re adding Trends for more than 70 new cities and countries – bringing the total number of locations to more than 100.
