2011 was a huge year for social media.

Twitter gave us a translation center, Stories and revised profile and brand pages. Facebook enhanced the UI on Profiles and Pages, launched Deals internationally and gave us a new-look Timeline. Google rolled out Google+ and LinkedIn, Groupon and LinkedIn all had IPOs.

Twitter 2011: One Billion Tweets Every 5 Days (And Other Record-Breaking Events) [INFOGRAPHIC]

2011 was a huge year for Twitter, with the social platform breaking records left, right and centre.

The Japanese celebration of the New Year started the ball rolling, and in May, Beyoncé’s pregnancy announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards set a new tweets per second (TPS) record on Twitter. Despite a host of major events, including earthquakes in Japan and the USA, the death of Steve Jobs and the raid on Osama Bin Laden, this record stood until December, when it was beaten by, of all things, the television airing of a 25-year old Japanese movie.

Twitter 2011 – A Year In Review [VIDEO]

Whichever way you look at it, 2011 was a huge year.

It had more than a little of everything: the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, political scandal and revolution, the deaths of several major celebrities and tech giants, the farce that was President Obama’s birth certificate, a Royal Wedding, the raid on Osama Bin Laden (and Colonel Gaddafi), the ‘Rapture’, the final space shuttle mission, Google+, the London riots, Facebook Timeline, a new iPhone, a world population of 7 billion and, uh, Rebecca Black.

And all of it was documented on Twitter – live, and in real-time.

What Mattered In 2011 For Social Media? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Whichever way you look at it, 2011 was a very big year for news.

From the death of Osama Bin Laden, the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and the London riots, through to the Royal Wedding, Occupy Wall Street and the return of Charlie Sheen, this year had a lot to talk about.

Twitter’s #YearInReview: Which World Events Triggered The Most Tweets In 2011? [INFOGRAPHIC]

In the final part of their 2011 #YearInReview, Twitter has charted the top Tweets Per Second (TPS) moments of 2011.

The biggest spike on Twitter this year came during Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards back in August, when the all-time record of 8,868 TPS was established. Other peaks this year included the resignation (and later, death) of Steve Jobs, the execution of Troy Davis, New Year’s Day and raid on Osama Bin Laden.

Twitter in 2011: The Year of Spam Accounts, Breaking News and Micro-Prayers

New Year’s Eve. A time for hope. A time to start over. A time to consume enough cups of good-cheer to make us wake up on New Years Day to a timeline of sloppy Tweets, telling our followers that we love them, …or hate them. …or that we are IN love with them.
