Promoted Trends Earned Twitter At Least $5 Million In March [STATS]

One of the most effective – and lucrative – advertising products on Twitter is the Promoted Trend, which allows brands to dominate the Trending Topics on Twitter with a hashtag or phrase that sits right at the top of the list, thus guaranteeing high visibility and, one would assume, clicks.

This prominence comes at a price – back in February, the cost of a Promoted Trend on Twitter in the U.S. was hiked to an eye-opening $200,000. For one day. This is all relative, of course. There are more users of Twitter in the U.S. than in any other country, so they can charge more. A 24-hour Promoted Trend in the UK costs around £20,000, simply because, proportionately, less people will see it. But those figures add up, and they add up fast. In March alone, Twitter raked in more than $5 million from Promoted Trend advertising, and that was simply from sales made in the States.

Twitter UK Posts First-Year Profit Of Just £16,500

Twitter’s pricing on the secondary share market now values the company at a heady $11 billion, which is good news for CEO Dick Costolo and the rest of the Twitter board – and investors – as we head towards the firm’s IPO, which is being pencilled in for 2014.

Of course, this is all still speculative. And while Twitter is estimated to have earned $288 million in global advertising revenues last year, the firm has yet to post a profit.

Well, good news, as the UK subsidiary of the micro-blogging social network has done just that, albeit on a very minor scale.

The micro-blogging network is pegged to earn $288.3 million in total ad revenues in 2012, up 106.7 percent on last year, and will see further gains over the next two years, with $807.5 million anticipated by 2014.

This would suggest that the micro-blogging platform is growing twice as fast as has been suggested by other studies.

Twitter Will Be More Valuable Than Facebook, Says Industry Expert

With Facebook gearing up for what is likely to be a $100 billion IPO and Twitter showing no signs – or interest – in following suit anytime soon, the suggestion that Twitter’s value might exceed that of Facebook, now or at any time in the future, might well appear to be folly.

Not so, says Rory Sutherland, vice-chairman of Ogilvy & Mather, and the man who helped turn Microsoft into a major force in the 1980s. Sutherland has not only tipped Twitter to ultimately outrank Facebook in valuation, but that the micro-blogging network will also will reveal itself to be a money-making monster.

The analysis, published on SharesPost and written by Candlestick Advisors, also predicts $166 million in revenue for Twitter in 2011 and $329 million in 2012, but is dependent on seeing some early success from Twitter’s largely unproven ad platform.

Ker-Ching! A Promoted Trend On Twitter Now Costs $120,000 A Day

Earlier this week we documented comments made by Twitter’s director of revenue Adam Bain (@adambain) about the growth of Twitter’s advertising platform. Now, in a follow-up piece at Clickz.com, Bain has expanded on the success of the network’s marketing tools, and how Twitter is working closely with major advertisers en route to building its US sales force.

The article also reveals that the cost of a Promoted Trend on Twitter – the top Trend that you see on your sidebar on Twitter.com – is now up to a heady $120,000 per day. Quite a leap from the $25-30,000 daily rate that was billed when Promoted Trends first launched back in April 2010.

What Price A Twitter IPO?

Yesterday, and with much fervour, business-focused social networking site LinkedIn went public on the New York Stock Exchange and, despite some initial scepticism and the usual ‘bubble’ allegations, the launch was a resounding success.

The stock opened at $83, and after rallying to an intraday high of $122.70 closed at $94.25, up 109% from the company’s $45 pricing. This makes LinkedIn one of the few companies in the post-dotcom era to double on its first day of trading, and values the business at a heady $9 billion.

Yesterday, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, speaking at the Reuters Global Technology Summit, said that a Facebook IPO was “inevitable”.

“People used to ask us if we were going to get sold. People have stopped asking that question. We’re not. No-one is buying us. We’re going public.”

Which begs the question: is Twitter next, and high how could it go?

Twitter Valuation Up To $7.7 Billion

A recent auction of Twitter shares on the secondary market has now raised the value of the company to $7.7 billion, doubling the $3.7 billion valuation made in December of last year.

Says Reuters:

Investors have agreed to pay $34.50 a share for Twitter in the auction conducted by Sharespost, an exchange for private company shares that announced the news on Friday.

Based on the 223.7 million estimated fully diluted shares of Twitter listed by Sharespost on its website, the deal would suggest a valuation of roughly $7.7 billion.

The Twitter auction, which Sharespost said was oversubscribed, involved 35,000 shares of Twitter’s Series B preferred stock, Sharespost said.

Recently Twitter was valued at $4.5 billion after rumours of interest from J.P. Morgan’s Digital Growth Fund, although that story has since been discounted by Biz Stone. Still, this latest auction has completely surpassed that number and Twitter is now closing in rapidly on the $10 billion figure that was being touted about when Google and Facebook were also rumoured to be ‘interested’ last month.

eMarketer expects Twitter to earn $150 million in revenues this year, the vast majority of which will come from the US. This represents a substantial increase over revenues of $45 million during 2010, the first year Twitter sold advertising.

By 2012, eMarketer forecasts, Twitter revenues will reach $250 million. But the company must show it can live up to its hype.

“If Twitter can grow its user base and convince marketers of its value as a go-to secondary player to Facebook, it will succeed in gaining revenue,” said Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer principal analyst. “In 2011 it must work overtime to give its early advertisers a positive experience.”

Twitter’s monetization efforts will go into full gear this year, with the current Promoted Products suite and the pending launch of a self-serve platform akin to Facebook’s highly successful ad targeting system.

Twitter revenues will still be small compared to those of Facebook, but by next year eMarketer expects Twitter to pull in more ad dollars than Myspace.

Looks good, but despite what appears to be impressive growth, certainly percentage-wise, Twitter’s numbers seem a little shy to me. As of right now, Twitter’s overall network size is about one-quarter of that of Facebook (about 600m) – will the latter really be making 20x what Twitter makes in 2012, even with their three-year head start? And if so, isn’t that a pretty big fail on Twitter’s part? And what are these ‘other social networks’ that are on target to reach $1.5 billion?

As usual, take it all with a hefty pinch.
