Twitter Suspends Romney Parody Account Just Before Speech

In a move that brings to mind Twitter’s recent suspension of Guy Adams (after he criticized Twitter advertiser NBC for its lackluster Olympics coverage), a Mitt Romney parody account, @MexicanMitt, was suspended last night – just before Romney gave his speech.

Where’s the similarity? #RomneyRyan2012 was a promoted trend last night – and promoted trends are not cheap.

Even respected journalists are sometimes fooled by Twitter accounts claiming to be popular sports figures. With schools facing and handing out penalties for student athletes’ misguided posts more and more often, isn’t it inevitable that one of these “parody” accounts will eventually cross the line and claim to be genuine?

Since Twitter broke the news of Osama’s death late last night, I guess it makes some sort of sense that his “ghost” would find its haunting grounds on the network. In just 12 hours, Osama’s Ghost has grown from 0 to over 35,000 followers – and counting.
