Twitter has filed the official statement for its widely-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and with the Form S-1 registration the company has unveiled a series of important statistics about the state of Twitter, both as a platform and entity, heading into their stock launch.

And for the most part the numbers are pretty disappointing.

Twitter Now Seeing 400 Million Tweets Per Day, Increased Mobile Ad Revenue, Says CEO

Twitter just keeps on getting bigger. And, perhaps, has finally cracked the nut that continues to hang over the platform’s head: profitability.

Speaking at The Economist‘s Ideas Economy: Information 2012 event yesterday, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo revealed a couple of juicy tidbits about the state of the micro-blogging platform, circa June 2012. One, that Twitter is now seeing a heady 400 million tweets per day. And two, that mobile advertising surpassed the company’s non-mobile revenue stream for the first time two weeks ago.

Twitter On Future Profitability: "We're Thinking About Big, Big Numbers."

Twitter Chief Operating Officer Dick Costolo (@dickc) has been outlining Twitter’s plans for its new advertising system and addressing concerns about the company’s long-term monetization goals.

“We were valued at over a billion dollars last September, so we’re going to live in a world where we need to be generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue,” Costolo told Reuters. “We’re thinking about big, big numbers.”

Other points of interest:

  • Twitter is currently adding another dozen advertisers to their Promoted Tweets platform, which Costolo says has been “successful beyond our wildest dreams.”
  • Costolo says Twitter will start to “ramp this up aggressively” beginning in the third quarter of 2010
  • The long-hyped premium Twitter accounts are due this July or August

Costolo: “I’m super confident but it’s a dark tunnel and we’ll see where we are at the end of Q4.”
