The Syrian Electronic Army, the group behind the April 23 hacking of the Associated Press Twitter account, and more recently CBS, hacked into the E!
The hackers tweeted a fake “exclusive” allegedly from Justin Bieber announcing that he was gay, which prompted more than 1,000 retweets and more than 350 favorites.

Twitter Warns Journalists That News And Media Organizations Are ‘High Value Targets’ For Hackers

Last week the world was rocked by a tweet issued by the official Associated Press (@AP) Twitter profile that reported that President Barack Obama had been injured after two explosions in the White House.

Except (and of course), the news was fake. There were no explosions at the White House, and President Obama had not been injured. The problem? The source, the @AP Twitter account, was real, and had been compromised by hackers, and Twitter has now warned journalists and media companies that they expect these attacks to continue.

Why Twitter Needs A Spam Filter

Twitter is doing a lot to combat spam. The dedicated @spam and @safety teams work their little cotton socks off identifying and removing suspicious-looking tweets and accounts, and there are many ways that users can help out, either by reporting spam directly to Twitter, or using a third party app.

However, it’s not enough. It seems like you can’t comment on anything that’s popular and in the mainstream on Twitter – iPads, iPhones, Starbucks, BMW and KFC Double Down sandwiches (just me?) – without getting a loosely-related, keyword-alerted tweet from a spambot a few moments later. And while it’s certainly true that users can and should be playing their part in battling this menace, it simply isn’t viable that we have to rely on Twitter to then manually take care of everything for us.

No, what we desperately need are email-like spam filters on Twitter. And we need them now.

Twitter Beefs Up User Safety, Makes Secure HTTP The Default For Twitter.com

Last March Twitter implemented new functionality that allowed users to increase their security by allowing them to browse Twitter.com via a HTTPS (HTTP Secure) server.

HTTPS provides encrypted communication and secure identification on a web server, and is most commonly used for financial transactions. HTTPS for Twitter (and also Facebook, which activated HTTP Secure browsing in January 2011) offers greater protection when accessing the network over unsecured WiFI connections.

Now, in an effort to further improve user safety, Twitter has made HTTPS the default setting for all profiles.

Twitter Acquires Online Security Firm Dasient To Beef Up Malware Protection

Barracuda Labs surveyed people from 21 countries about their social networking habits and attitudes towards online privacy and security.

Ponemon Institute, a research organization, polled 4,640 companies around the world, and more than half said that computer attacks had grown directly as a result of staff using social networks.

How Do You Manage Problem Followers On Twitter?

Easy: block them.

It really is that simple. Twitter is too precious a resource to be ruined by the antisocial behaviour of a persistent minority.

And it is a minority – most of the people you meet and engage with on Twitter will be courteous and civil. But a small percentage of every community – and this is certainly true across the internet – will be rude and disruptive, going out of their way to poison the well.

Thankfully, peace of mind is just one click away.

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube – How To Identify (And Fight) Internet Trolls [INFOGRAPHIC]

Wikipedia defines a troll as “someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response”, and these foul beasts have been the plague of the internet since it first opened its doors.

They quickly populate (and poison) any place on the web that is even remotely popular. So naturally, once social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook began to attract hundreds of millions of users, the trolls began to arrive. En masse.
