Twitter Helps Us Stay In Touch (Especially When We’re Miles Apart), Says Study [REPORT]

A new study has revealed how Twitter helps people stay in contact with friends, family and colleagues irrespective of where they are around the world.

Indeed, the further any two users are apart, the more likely it is that they will communicate with each other on a regular basis through Twitter.

Why Is Twitter So Unpopular In France? [STUDY]

Twitter – it’s everywhere, isn’t it?

Well, maybe not, according to one study. Despite being widely known throughout France, with 89 percent of internet users aged 15 or over in the country aware of the micro-blogging social network, just 11 percent have, or once had, a Twitter profile.

Moreover, the survey, conducted by Ipsos and CGI back in March, revealed that only one in twenty (5 percent) of these users were actively engaged on Twitter, and most of these were simply reading (as opposed to posting) tweets.

Travel industry, here’s a little tidbit to brighten your Q4 earnings estimates: new research out of the University of Vermont reveals that the farther we are from home, the happier our tweets reflect us to be.

The study, released last week, titled “Happiness and the Patterns of Life: A Study of Geolocated Tweets,” reports that “expressed happiness increases logarithmically with distance from an individual’s average location.”

Let’s look at this a little more closely.

But that’s not all. It turns out social media users are great multitaskers all round, with social media being a popular concurrent pastime whilst travelling, working and shopping, and even when using the lavatory.

How Is Twitter Being Used In The UK? [STUDY]

Twitter is well-established in the United Kingdom with some 80 percent of the country’s 10 million Twitter users accessing the platform via a mobile device.

UK users are also avid users of Twitter whilst watching television, commuting, shopping and even whilst in bed, and a new study has unveiled further insights into just how ingrained the micro-blogging platform has become within the British consciousness.

Of particular interest for marketers, the report revealed that almost one in every twenty-five tweets sent in the UK mention brands – equating to an incredible 12,600 tweets per minute – which is perhaps the greatest indication yet of Twitter’s growing value to modern business.

In a new study published in EPJ Data Science, scientists from Royal Holloway University in collaboration with Princeton University delved inside the formation of tribe-like communities on Twitter.

The team found that language is an extremely reliable indicator of what communities users belong to, and vice versa – language used in tweets is an accurate indicator of what users might belong to that Twitter community.

Let’s take a closer look.

STUDY: Brand Engagement On Instagram Has Grown 35% Since Twitter Split [INFOGRAPHIC]

Twitter and Instagram parted company in December, when the latter decided to turn off all support for Twitter Cards, which previously allowed Instagram images to show up within Twitter. Now, you have to click on a link to see that same image, which will open (on Instagram) in a separate tab within your browser.

Yep: so awkward.

While this is arguably the premier example of a first world problem, it has had a significant impact on engagement levels within Twitter. Previously, Instagram was driving traffic to Twitter via its photo content. Now, and as a direct result of this relatively subtle change, Twitter is driving traffic to Instagram, which could mean a rethink on the social media strategy for many photo-sharing brands.

Are Twitter Users More Liberal and Negative Than Most? [STUDY]

If you’re online any amount of time, you realize it’s a pretty mean place. People post things they’d NEVER say to someone in person, as the thought of hurting anyone’s feelings has become almost alien.

The suspension of disbelief online is pretty complete – and crazy. We smugly type horribly hurtful things at each other, while pretending it isn’t personal and then rail against the horrors of cyberbullying – talk about the bully calling the kettle black!

But is Twitter really any worse than the Internet overall? According to this study – yes (implied). And it also is NOT representative of overall public sentiment. So it looks like if you’re on Twitter, chances are you’re a jerk (and liberal).

Want More Followers On Twitter? Be Positive, Write Clearly And Retweet Well [STUDY]

Be Positive, Write Clearly And Retweet Well [STUDY]" src="http://www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/files/2013/02/follow-us-button.png" alt="" width="200" height="200" />How do you get more followers on Twitter?

For brands and individuals alike, it’s the age-old question. Like it or not, for many people size still matters on Twitter, and you’re far more likely to attract new followers if you’ve already got quite a few to your name.

So how do you convince others to get on board your Twitter-train (especially if you’re new)? Engage with influencers? Use certain hashtags? Tweet more? Tweet less?

Nope. The best thing to do is to be positive, say scientists.

Twitter’s vast quantities of real-time, fine-grained data make it an ideal resource for sociological research.

Scientists and statisticians can study Twitter for insights on people’s spending habits, what they watch on TV, their political views, and even their happiness.

Which is exactly what a group of researchers did, conducting an analysis of 10 million geotagged tweets to determine the happiest and most depressed states and cities in America. And the findings are fascinating.

Incredibly, Twitter Doubled In Size In The U.S. In 2012, Says Study [STATS]

Twitter was the world’s fastest-growing social platform last year, with the micro-blogging network’s 40 percent active user growth between Q2 and Q4 of 2012 more than enough to push Facebook and Google+ into second and third place respectively.

Twitter grew significantly in many countries, with active user gains of more than 50 percent in Hong Kong, Russia and China, but, after a couple of years of stagnation, it’s Twitter’s huge advance in the U.S. that is perhaps its most incredible feat to date.

Planning Events, Watching TV And Chatting About Products – How Do We Use Twitter? [STUDY]

A new study has revealed that Twitter is the fastest-growing social network in the world, adding 40 percent more active users in 2012 to finish ahead of Facebook and the fast-climbing (but still oddly quiet) Google+.

This data comes courtesy of GlobalWebIndex, who have expanded on their findings in an updated post, which also reveals several changes in the way that people are using Twitter.

Facebook More Influential Than Twitter For Social TV, Says Data [STUDY]

Twitter’s influence on television is well-documented – it’s now very unusual for any prime-time television program not to actively encourage at least one hashtag (shows like The X Factor have several) for fans to use whilst watching the show – and the bigger TV events can easily generate tens of thousands of tweets per second.

Moreover, and especially during live events, broadcasters will often “check the reaction on Twitter” for an immediate response.

Conversely, the major networks rarely push or advocate the use of Facebook during their programming, nor do they load up the world’s most popular social network to see what’s happening during live shows. All of which, according to the latest data, might be a mistake.

Twitter Can Help You Lose Weight [STUDY]

Mary has written before about how successful the #tweetwhatyoueat initiative can be for dieters.

And now a study at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health substantiates those findings.
