Follow The Titanic’s Ill-Fated Voyage On Twitter

Are you a history buff? If so, you should check out the Titanic twitter feed. It allows followers to “experience Titanic’s epic journey with day-by-day and minute-by-minute tweets as if from on board the ship itself.” A little spooky, but very cool.

Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of its sinking, the Titanic Twitter stream is brought to you by The History Press. It kicked off on March 10 and will run through April 15, when the ship met with disaster.

The tweets attempt to bring followers into the period – and they do a good job. The tone and observations made by the person tweeting, presumably the ship’s Captain, Edward John Smith, demonstrate a blend of historical fact, excitement, foreboding and a sense of dignified pride.

And the pictures, though you could probably find them elsewhere online, take on added meaning when placed in context.

There’s also an app covering the Titanic’s journey, from “her construction in the docks of Belfast to the stories of those on board.” Features include:

- Detailed deck plans that can be expanded and explored
- Rare archive footage
- Colour images of the modern-day wreck
- Archive photographs of construction, launch and the interior
- Narrated survivor accounts and historical detail
- Information on the ship’s crossing, the disaster and the aftermath of the tragedy
- Biographies of the ship’s key figures
- A sinking timeline and survivor accounts that vividly retell what happened as the ship sank
- Unique insights into the build and design of the vessel
- ‘Did You Know?’ facts such as: There were two bathtubs for all of third class – one for men and one for women!

I wonder if Captain Smith tweet till the very end? There’s only one way to find out!
