Today is my Twitter birthday. My 4th, actually – I signed up for the network back on March 8, 2008. As I wrote about earlier in the week, I certainly did not take to Twitter immediately. It took me a while to get it – after an initial burst of modest activity, I dropped off the network entirely for six months at the tail-end of 2008. But then, all of a sudden, something clicked. Like magic. And I’ve never looked back.
Two worlds have collided: the Modern Language Association has revealed the proper way to cite a tweet in an academic paper.
Social media comes with a ton of benefits, but to make it work you need to invest heavily, and the most important investment is your time. Facebook might be the social media giant, but Twitter is playing the underdog pretty comfortably: according to new stats from eMarketer, Twitter is currently growing faster than Facebook in the US.
Music megastar Lady Gaga has become the first Twitter user to reach 20 million followers on the network, setting the record this past Saturday, March 3. Gaga was also the first Twitter user to reach 10 and 15 million followers, and accumulated her latest million, whom she refers to as her Little Monsters, in just 23 days.
Twitter’s financials have just been leaked, and they don’t look great. Gawker’s Ryan Tate got his hands on figures from Twitter’s 2010-2011 financials, which show a company hemorrhaging money.
Did you know that more than 66 percent of online adults are connected to one or more social media platforms? The most dominant social networking sites, which naturally includes Facebook and Twitter, but also Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Reddit (which should never be underestimated), have a collective audience of more than a billion active users, sucking up hours and hours of our time each and every month. But who exactly is using these channels?
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone recently said that spending hours and hours on the network each and every day is “unhealthy”, but while Twitter sees around 250 million daily tweets from its 130-140 million (estimated) active users, that equates to a per user average of just 1.85 tweets per day. And it’s a lot less if you factor in the entire userbase. Which hardly seems extreme. However, it does somewhat beg the questions: how often do YOU tweet? And how much is too much?
