Twitter expanded its location service, known as Twitter Places, by adding new location data. Announced on Twitter’s API Google Group, these changes will make it easier for developers to fine-tune their location-based offering, and allow users to choose more refined locations to add to their tweets.
Twitter will be partnering with several new organizations as part of their location API expansion, including: A&E Television Networks and History, Apontador, CityGrid Media, DotMenu/Allmenus, Gowalla, Infogroup, Localeze, Maponics,
OpenTable, TomTom, Wcities, Yellow Pages Group (Canada), and Zagat.
The announcement about the expanded data set also discusses new uses for Twitter’s search. Now, developers can use the IDs from their preferred partner to access the Twitter Places information about a particular location. This means that developers can find and use Tweets about a particular restaurant, for instance, by using Twitter Search through their preferred partner.
Developers can use this new data set to find tweets about places and use them in their applications. Twitter hopes that this will make it easier to develop for Twitter Places.
Twitter Places was announced in the summer, and has been used by only a small number of developers thus far. This announcement hints at the fact that Twitter wants to see its Places layer grow.
