Apple Has Acquired Map App Company Embark

Apple has reportedly acquired Embark Inc., a technology company behind a series of mass transit mapping apps. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin broke the news on her blog. Check it out: “We don’t know how much Apple paid for the several-person team it acquired very recently. But we heard from people knowledgeable about the deal that the company plans to directly integrate Embark’s technology into Apple Maps.” Embark helps users plan their trips on public transportation in major cities around the U.S. including apps for BART, the New York City subway, Boston’s T, the Long Island Railroad, New Jersey Transit, the Chicago L, the DC Metro, Metro North and Caltrain.

This is the second mass transit mapping acquisition from Apple this year. Earlier this summer, Apple reportedly purchased HopStop, another mass transit map app company. (Via TechCrunch).
