Autodesk To Buy Socialcam For $60 Million

Software company Autodesk has agreed to buy the popular social application Socialcam for $60 million. The deal is expected to close this October, at the end of Autodesk’s third fiscal quarter for 2013.

Samir Hanna, vice president, of Autodesk Consumer Group, commented on the news: “Mobile computing, the cloud and social media are improving and changing the way people design, engineer and create projects. Video is an ideal medium for professionals and consumers alike to communicate and share their design ideas.”

Socialcam lets users capture, edit and share video using either web-based social media or a mobile device. According to an Autodesk press release, the Socialcam app has been downloaded more than 16 million times from Apple’s App Store and the Android Market, since it launched last year. According to AppData, Socialcam’s Facebook app has had 54,700,000 average monthly users this month alone. The app is often the No. 1 app on our Top Facebook App of the Week list.
