Air Force Will Save $50 Million by Using 18,000 iPads

The Air Force is hoping to lighten its paper usage with 18,000 iPads over the next ten years. The cost savings could bring in as much as $50 million in revenue, some of its as reduced fuel costs. Currently, paper manuals can weigh as much as 30-40 pounds of paper for each crew member. This number jumps to 490 pounds of paper for a C-5 with 10 crew members.

In an interview on The Street, Major Brian Moritz explains the fuel savings:

By removing all that paper, AMC will capture about $750,000 in fuel savings [annually] just based off the decreased weight continued…

Bang With Friends Removed from Apple App Store

Controversial Facebook based app, Bang with Friends, got the boot from Apple’s app store. Since January, the app has garnered plenty of negative attention and one knock-off called Bang with Nobody (actually a Google Plus stab). Apple did not comment on why the app was removed, but it’s safely assumed that the app violated Apple’s sense of decency with the pornographic nature of the app. Perhaps Apple is not “down to bang.”

Bang with Friends’ graphic logo was recently switched to its benign acronyms on Facebook as a means to appease Facebook’s policy so similar tactics might work for Apple, though it seems that the company’s “puritanical porn policy” may keep it out indefinitely.

What do you think? Should customers be concerned with Apple’s authority in removing apps that millions of users may want?

Accessory Images Hint at iPad 5

Alibaba, the global manufacturer and supplier website, is full of listings of accessories for an iPad 5, suggesting that Apple will have a new tablet available pretty soon.

The images include products like iPad covers and stands for a device that is slimmer than the current device, similar to the thickness of an iPad Mini.

As TechCrunch points out, accessories on Alibaba is a good sign that a device is coming: “This has happened for nearly every iDevice launch since the iPhone 4. Every iPad — full size or mini — was revealed prior to Apple’s announcement through case makers. And a good chunk of case makers display their wares on Alibaba.com.”

Apple Will Pay $53M to Settle iPhone Warranty Suit

The settlement will reportedly be filed in a San Francisco federal weeks in the coming weeks. Wired broke the story:

According to several lawsuits combined in San Francisco, no matter what the problem, Apple refused to honor warranties if a white indicator tape embedded in the phone near the headphone or charging portals had turned pink or red. However, the tape’s maker, 3M, said humidity, and not water contact, could have caused the color to at least turn pink.

Affected consumers must file a claim to receive a payment, which is expected to be about $200. Devices involved in the suit include the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the first three generation iPod Touches.

What If Apple Made Cider?

What would happen if Apple made cider instead of technology? The commercial would probably look something like the video embedded above.

Carlsberg has released a clever ad for its Somersby cider, showing people lining up around the block for a first taste of apple cider. The iPad and iPhone puns fly furiously in the short commercial. Check it out:

Somersby Cider is a refreshing cider made from fermented apple juice and natural apple flavouring. No artificial sweeteners, flavours or colourings. Its uniquely juicy apple taste makes it a tasty and natural choice for the relaxed moments with your friends.

iBookstore in UK & Ireland Adds Break Out Bestsellers List

Apple Rumored to be Creating Plastic iPhone for Chinese Market

Rumors are resurfacing about cheaper Apple phones – this time, the details are coming from Jeremy Horwitz of iLounge. Horwitz’s sources describes the new model as being a plastic hybrid of Iphone 5 front, iPod Classic sides, and iPod Touch rear surface designs. The new design will be targeted towards low income Chinese consumers:

One of our sources claims that Apple’s iPhone prices remain too high for most mainland Chinese customers—the iPhone 5 hardware alone starts at $849 there, versus the iPhone 4 at $500, in a country where the average annual salary is around $3,000 per person.

Apple’s Chinese workers can hardly afford to buy the products they create. Chinese Foxconn workers responsible for making iPhones in China makes about $290 a month – with deductions around $72 for housing. continued…

Apple Settles Lawsuit With Parents Who Said In-App Purchases Were Too Easy For Kids

Apple has settled the class action lawsuit brought against the company by a group of parents who claimed that in-app purchasing took advantage of their children, who racked up large bills without knowing it. According to the lawsuit, children had made in-app purchases for as much as $300 without realizing what they were doing.

According to the terms of the settlement, most members of the lawsuit will receive a $5 credit to the iTunes Store. Those members of the lawsuit who incurred charges of more than $30 will get a credit or can apply for a full refund

In March 2011, Apple made it more difficult for kids to make in-app purchases, as such purchases now require a user to sign in to their account.
Evasi0n Jailbreak Software for iPad and iPhone Devices is Finally Here!

On the heels of Apple’s iOS update last week, hacker group the Evad3rs team has released the much-awaited jailbreak software, Evasi0n. Jailbreaking is a process that allows users to have more control over their own devices like the ability to install unapproved apps from the third party app store Cydia.

Thanks to the Electronics Frontier Foundation (EFF) Jailbreaking is a legal process. A court ruling in 2010 made jailbreaking explicitly legal, though it will void Apple’s warranty. Overriding iOS means that users will no longer be reliant on Apple for its security updates and potentially quicker fixes to security vulnerabilities. In 2011, jailbreak software from jailbreakme.com was able to secure devices for users against PDF-related flaws in iOS.

Evasi0n is currently experiencing a lot of heavy traffic, so you should take this time to back up your devices. Doing so can ensure that your data is safe in the event that something goes wrong. Don’t download from third party websites and links, as those may not be secure or legitimate copies.

Cydia currently boasts 22.8 million devices, but that number is expected to drastically increase. Cydia’s website has crashed – rumored to be from heavy traffic, over 1 TB per 10 minutes.

Apple Adds Short Code Vanity URLs For Apps

Apple has added a new feature that lets developers name URLs for their apps in the App Store. So rather than having long a URL with lots of code, these new short links can feature the name of your book, video game or company.

Apple explains these short links on its developer’s blog: “You can also create easy-to-read links to your app using App Store Short Links, which use the AppStore.com base URL plus a specific form of your app or company name. This provides a simple way for users to find your apps on the App Store directly from your website or marketing campaigns.”

CNET broke the news during the Super Bowl last night:

The commercial for the upcoming ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’ film, Paramount flashed a quick promotion for its iOS app, complete with an AppStore.com link that takes people right to it. In function it’s identical to what Apple already uses through its iTunes links, but this one’s designed so that people can quickly type it into a mobile device or remember it for later.

iPhone Users More Likely to Pay Higher Phone Bills

Consumer Intelligence Research Panel (CIRP) released new findings on phone bills showing iPhone users paying much more than other smart phone users. The survey shows that on average, 60% of iPhone users had monthly bills of at least $100 compared to only 53% of Android users. 33% of Android and Blackberry users were able to obtain average rates between $25-$50 per month compared to only 6% of iPhone users. Michael Levin of CIRP explains:

“We think it has to do with their data plans and carriers, rather than their usage habits… They are all on expensive data plans, unlike Android users, some of which are on prepaid or unsubsidized plans with regional carriers.”
