New Contest: My eReading Pet

E-ink is running a photo contest this week and it looks like a lot of fun. Got an eReader? Got a pet? Then I have a contest for you.

Take a photo of your pet reading on your device (reading, not chewing) and you can enter the contest. The photo can be posed, of course, and your pet need not be awake at the time. One of the entries shows an English Bulldog passed out next to a Kindle.

Right now I’m sorting through my several eReaders, looking to see what would work best. Right now I’m thinking the Kindle DX, showing a copy of A Dog’s Tale, would present the best photo.

Are you planning to enter? You can find the contest on Facebook.

Kobo’s Giving Away an eReader Every Day Until Christmas

If you’re up to solving a simple puzzle then here’s your chance to win a Kobo Touch.

Kobo launched a “12 Days of Christmas” contest yesterday, and everyday they will be giving away a Kobo Touch eReader.  They’re ust giving away the one, but they are also offering discount coupons as consolation prizes. I myself won a 25% off coupon just a few minutes ago. It’s a little too late to count on one of these eReaders as a Christmas gift, but it will make a pleasant surprise when it arrives in January.

The rules are pretty simple. You can enter once a day, and each day you play the contest will enter you to win the Grand Prize, which is a bundle with a Kobo Touch, laptop, smartphone, and more.

National Literacy Trust Launches The ComiX Factor

The UK based non-for-profit National Literacy Trust has recently announced a new program designed to get school children interested in books.

The ComiX Factor is a contest where kids are asked to create a new sidekick for Dorko, a character created by The Etherington Brothers. The kids are encouraged to invent details about the sidekick, write out a description, and draw the character. They can also enter the contest by finishing a comic strip that The Etherington Brothers provided.

The contest is organized through schools, and participating teachers are encouraged to use this to motivate their entire classroom. “Comics and graphic novels are popular types of reading materials among children and adults alike, so using them for writing-based activities is a sure fire way to get your pupils engaged. In particular, those who struggle with reading and writing might be “drawn in” by comics and graphic novels, but the rest of your class could also benefit from the multimodal nature of this genre.”

Pottermore now Offering Early Beta Access

When J.K.Rowling’s new website launched a few weeks back, the press release promised that a limited number of fans would be granted early access to the site. Pottermore isn’t due to launch until October, but a contest  was started on Sunday to let people win that early access.

The contest is called Find The Magic Quill, and it’s fairly simple. A new trivia question will be posted every day this week on Pottermore, and the first few who find the answer and append it to the website address quill.pottermore.com/ will get a chance to sign up for Pottermore.

The triva questions are posted once a day but they’re not posted at the same time everyday.

It’s not clear how many fans the site will accept, but given the size of the Harry Potter fanbase it won’t be more than a tithe. Good luck with trying to win the contest; the Pottemore website has been so busy these past couple days that it has been inaccessible at times.

Angry Robot Books Celebrates its 2nd Anniversary with a Contest

Mike Ramalho announced yesterday that Angry Robot would be giving away 2 sets of all the books it has published in its 2 years of operation. You can choose to get the set as either eBooks or as print books.

ARB published about 24 titles a year, so the set would include 40 to 50 books.  The shipping alone will be a tidy sum.

You can get the set by entering a contest. Mike wants to see you flex your creative muscles and come up with a lovely (or cringeworthy / funny / ridiculous) Hallmark style poem that would suit a birthday card for Angry Robot.

The contest started yesterday and it runs until July 14, so don’t delay.
