Advancing World Literacy Through eBooks and eReaders

Children in Africa, a phrase that often stirs the guilt strings of the heart and often accompanied by photos of sad, hungry faces. Books, a word denoting the common, yet powerful tool that enables limitless hours of learning and entertainment. Combine the tool and you have a great nonprofit in the form of Worldreader.

Naturally, Worldreader’s heartwarming mission is worth writing and reading about – since our first story about the nonprofit in 2012, the group has manged to distribute over 10,000 kindles to 3,000 word-hungry kids and are on their way to sharing nearly half a million ebooks to those eager, young readers. continued…

Your Brain on eReaders: Evidence Suggests that Reading from Paper might be more Conducive for Learning

The translation of stories into paper books took thousands of years and over two decades to accumulate on my humble book shelf. My brain on the other hand… has been evolving to read in codex form for over 1500 years. These are the things I tell myself to justify my difficulties with reading on digital screens.

Apparently, I’m not the only bibliophile to be challenged by the joys of paper reading and the convenience of eReaders. According to a recent article in the Scientific American, “reading on paper still boasts unique advantages.” The article cites research indicating that reading from physical formats gives us the possibility of creating a map of the textual narrative and eReaders lack this mental representation. Most eReaders are improving at superhuman speeds, but they are missing the intuitive navigational features that we have become accustomed to learning from. continued…

Social Reader App Readmill Comes to iPhone

Social readers now have another option for following their favorite friends and authors: Readmill for iPhone. The experience is comparable to a union of Kindle and Last.fm.

The app is extremely social – like a reading party across the interwebs. Bookworms can highlight passages that can be shared shared across various social platforms and discussed amongst readers on Readmill’s internal social network. You can also view highlights from other users in your current book, while tweeting your author’s twitter handle.

Your Readmill’s bookshelf is supported by a personal cloud storage space that’s accessible from any iOS device. Readmill currently supports various eBook formats like PDF, Adobe DRM, and ePub. Readers can purchase more books from over 30 retailers including Kobo and Feedbooks. Readmill is highly unlikely to team up with popular bookseller, Amazon, who has its own social book club, Shelfari.

Txtr Android App Updated with Support for eReader Accessory

We’re all used to seeing keyboards, headsets, and speakers as Bluetooth accessories but have you ever seen a smartphone with an optional ereader as an accessory? Txtr, an ebook developer based in Berlin, just unveiled the Beagle.

This 5″ ereader takes hardware minimalism to an extreme. Weighing in at just 128 grams, the Beagle lacks Wifi and a card slot. It’s even missing the USB port found on most ereaders these days. Instead the Beagle is powered by a couple AAA batteries, and ebooks are transferred onto it via Bluetooth.

This ereader isn’t available yet, but when it is you’re going to need txtr’s Android app to load up its 4GB of storage. The app was just updated yesterday, and support for the Beagle is only available for gadgets running Android 4.0 and above. Txtr plans to also update their iOS app so it too can support this ereader.

Google Play

POD Book Shows ’56 Broken Kindle Screens’

56 Broken Kindle Screens – Silvio Lorusso and Sebastian Schmieg (2012) from Silvio Lorusso on Vimeo.
You often hear about eBooks being made available as print on demand books, but digital artists Sebastian Schmieg and Silvio Lorusso have connected the two media in a new way. They have created a print on demand book project called 56 Broken Kindle Screens, which is a photo book that documents the downside to eBooks, broken eReaders.

Here is more about the book: “The book takes as its starting point the peculiar aesthetic of broken E Ink displays and serves as an examination into the reading device’s materiality. As the screens break, they become collages composed of different pages, cover illustrations and interface elements.”

The POD book is available from Lulu.com and its currently on sale for $4.90. We’re embedded a video of the project above. (Via BoingBoing).

LeVar Burton: ‘Cutting down trees to make books is not sustainable’

Who didn’t love Reading Rainbow as a kid? The iconic 80s show used songs, celebrities and video to actually make literature fun. Well, times they do change. And the show’s onetime host, LeVar Burton, says that Reading Rainbow just wouldn’t work on TV today and, furthermore, the days of printed books are also numbered.

“I don’t know what the time frame is, but I do know that at some point, cutting down trees to make books is not sustainable. It’s just one of those things we’re gonna have to get over ourselves about, right? Like oil consumption, it’s just not sustainable,” he explained in our latest Media Beat interview. ”So, we’re looking at a future, whenever it comes, that we’re gonna consume most of the reading that we do on some kind of electronic device or another. We will still have printed books; they’ll never go away. I think our emotional attachment to them is too strong. What it will do, I believe, though is make the books that we own more valuable to us, more precious.”

(And watch the full interview for a freakin’ awesome homage to that beloved RR theme song.)

Part 2: Tuesday, Burton introduces us to the new Reading Rainbow app.
Part 3: Wednesday, we discuss Burton’s role in Roots and how he achieved longevity in Hollywood.

New Sony Reader Launched With EverNote, Facebook Support

For a while now FCC paperwork and leaks have given rise to rumors that Sony was working on a new ereader. Those rumors were put to rest today with the launch of the Sony Reader PRS-T2.

This ereader looks much the same as the previous model, and it even has the same screen, touchscreen, storage, and other specs. It even appears to be running Android, just like its predecessor. And while it does lack the headphone jack found on the previous model, it also gained a couple new software features. continued…

New Nook Touch to Ship Next Month With Front Light – $139

It looks like yesterday’s leak showing a new, front-lit Nook Touch was as accurate as predicted.

Barnes & Noble has just announced the “Nook Touch with GlowLight”. They’re building on the same Nook Touch hardware with its 6″E-ink screen, and they’ve added a light to the screen.

As you probably know, an E-ink screen cannot emit light like an LCD screen, it can only reflect it. This means that any light which is integrated with an ereader must be placed in front of the screen. That’s what B&N has done here.

B&N is boasting that battery life is over a month, but they do not state how long the battery will last with the light on. Also, it’s clear that the new Nook Touch has some significant changes in the hardware; it’s nearly half an ounce lighter than the regular Nook Touch.

The new Nook is up for pre-order today for $139 at www.nook.com and it scheduled to arrive in stores and ship starting in early May, making a perfect gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and graduations.

How To Responsibly Throw Away Your eReader & Tablet In NYC

Don’t let anybody tell you that eReaders are a new trend. As if readers of this blog didn’t know that eReaders have been alive and well for a long time, we now have proof. New York City already thinks these devices are worth throwing away.

Along with cell phones, computers, printers, DVD players, scanners, TVs and mp3 players, the city is accepting eReaders and tablets at its Spring 2012 NYC SAFE Disposal Events, where city residents can safely recycle used electronics among other things. (The Manhattan event will take place in Union Square on Sunday April 22, 10-4 pm).

According to NYC’s brochure, “Electronics will be responsibly recycled or refurbished for reuse through a manufacture-funded program.”

Hacked Nook Touch Runs Kobo Android App

The following video shows a trick that isn’t very useful (it’s not that hard to transfer DRMed eBooks), but it is cool none the less.

The Nook Touch has a large and dedicated hacking community, and today one of those hackers shows us that you can install other reading apps on it. Specifically, you’re looking at the latest edition of the Kobo Android App, and it’s running on a hacked Nook Touch. I’m told that you can also install the Kindle Android app, making the Nook Touch the most capable E-ink eReader on the market.

Kobo Touch Updated

Kobo has just rolled out another update for their 6″ eReader, the Kobo Touch. I haven’t had a chance to install it myself, but Kobo is reporting that this update fixes a number of customer complaints, including:

Improved recognition of page-turn taps

Home screen now correctly remembers your carousel choice

Improved sync performance

Fixed rendering of menu items when a word is highlighted

Fixed trouble connecting to wifi – reported by our customers continued…
