Flipboard Update Adds Better Google Reader Integration, New Shopping Options

Flipboard has rolled an update for its Android app this week. Along with easier access to Google Reader feeds and folders, the update adds improved navigation within individual sections, in-app hints, new shopping cart features, and the usual round of bug fixes and under the hood improvements.

One of the better reading for entertainment apps just got a little better. As someone who reads both professionally and for fun, I’m sure you can appreciate how pleased I am.

You can find the app in Google Play.

Flipboard Officially Launches on Android – Coming Soon to Nook Tablet, Kindle Fire

The social news aggregator Flipboard has just brought the beta test for its Android app to a close in a remarkable amount of time. This app was only launched in the last couple days of May and is now available in Google Play.

After months of anticipation, Flipboard has officially launched on Android and will soon be available on many devices including the Nook Tablet from B&N and Amazon’s Kindle Fire.

“People are amazed by all the things they can see on Flipboard, and often the most personal and interesting stories come from friends,” said Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard. “Today we have over 2000 featured content partners from around the world and, now with the addition of Google+ and YouTube, we have all of the popular social networks for our readers to sit back and enjoy.”

Demand for the app has been amazing, TechCrunch reports, and there’s been extensive feedback offered by the early adopters. This app saw over a half a million downloads during the beta.

Flipboard to Get Google Plus Integration

When Google launched Google+ last year it looked like they were going to make the social network its own self-contained world.  But today it looks like that will change. Google’s vp of product management Bradley Horowitz was speaking at Le Web ’12 in London yesterday and he announced a new partnership.

Flipboard is going to be the first app to get access to Google+ APIs. Pretty soon you’ll be able to use the app to follow the activities of anyone you know on Google+ (all 4 of them). You’ll be able to access posts, photos, video and other data without visiting the social network directly.

Robert Scoble added more details on his Google+ page:

My favorite way to read the social web is Flipboard. This is why I’ve been here less and less lately over the past few months and have moved a lot of my energy over to Facebook, which is available there.

This is the beginning of a real API. One that can write and read.

Why isn’t this API open to all developers? Because Google doesn’t yet have good noise controls and is wanting to make sure they build their social garden stage-by-stage and not be forced later to piss off developers because they need to change their API to protect the user experience here.

Flipboard for Android to Get Beta Release Soon

Many readers have been eagerly waiting for Flipboard’s news aggregator reading app to show up on Android and it looks like they’ll have to wait a little longer.

While this app may have shipped Samsung Galaxy SIII, Flipboard has been holding off on releasing the app to the rest of the Android world. I had thought that Flipboard was delaying because Samsung had paid for an exclusive, but it turns out that there is a technical reason.

Engadget has learned that this app is coming soon and that the delay is due to the many different Android devices on the market. Flipboard is quite the polished app on the iPad, and the developers want to offer the same quality on Android. The initial release well be under a beta label (so it will keep expectations in check). Users will have the option of submitting bug reports to help fix the many quirks  that are going to appear.

Updaye: Flipboard released the beta app this afternoon. You can get it here.

FlipBoard Adds Podcasts From NPR, PRI, & More

FlipBoard, the social reading magazine, just got a little more vocal. This iPad app got a new update yesterday which adds podcasts from National Public Radio and Public Radio International to the many curated news sources available in the app. Readers will also find content from the social music site SoundCloud.

The new content is available in 2 ways. You can add the podcasts to your reading selections in the Content Guide just like any other news source, and you can also open the new audio tab on the menu and search there for the specific song or podcast you’re interested in.

You can add either individual clips to your app or you can add specific sources such as PRI’s The World or KQED. These are then added to your reading selections, which means new content from theses sources will show up among the blog posts and news stories you’re reading.
